Adding waypoint

Can someone pls explain the maybe obvious?
How do I add a waypoint for a unit within the existing waypoints vs. dragging the waypoint?
At times left-click-hold-drag a waypoint leads to the creation of a new waypoint to be inserted, next time I am only dragging the existing WP around. Whats the correct procedure?

Pretty basic stuff but so far I had just F3-freshly created the WP-string when above procedure went wrong, but for sure there is a more sophisticated approach, no?

I'm curious about that too. I'm forever fumbling around with the waypoints... [&:]
