Topo Maps Anyone?

Post by Mad Russian »

While this is a poor example of what can be done I was able to remap A Time To Dance with a topo map. The map is poor quality if you zoom out but it gives an example of what can be done if we expand our horizons.

This first screen shot is of the ACR getting the alert in Wollbach.

Good Hunting.

This second shot is of both sides deployed between Bad Neustadt and Rodelmaier.

The map is pretty bland at the moment but there are better examples of topo maps we should be able to get. Once we find those we should be able to put some very interesting maps together! [:D]

Good Hunting.

I have wondered how many people have realized that you don't need to use the "official tiles" to make a map for FPC. You can scan a map from any source, size it to fit the FPC scale and use it to play as your map. You could hand draw a map and use it. Once you scan and properly size the map, you put it in the map editor in the game and then input the data so that the game recognizes the appropriate terrain. I have done a couple of maps for my own use and it is really quite easy. The main thing you have to ensure is that you don't infringe upon someone's copyright. If you use someone else's maps, get permission first or don't publish it.

I've done it. You either have to come up with graphics that the map value editor can read and populate for you
tm.asp?m=3437685#

Or enter all the values manually.

I've been waiting on the additional elevations to be implemented before moving forward, well that and some other in game tweaks. I do have map based on the Elbe-Seiten Kanal region north of Wolfsburg I knocked out - maybe I'll think to upload it when I get home this evening.

Not sure I should release this, but I stink on making maps, so maybe someone else can try to use this 1:50,000 scale map of Fulda.

1:50,000 scale map Fulda

I have other topo maps of Germany, going to take some time do post them or at least where you can download them.

That's the map series I've got as well.

I've got 6 maps in total of 1:50,000 that all join to that one.

They're pretty detailed [:)]

What I would like to do is use this map to make scenarios from it without using hexdraw program. I'm not going to use the whole map just some parts of it. I will need some help answering questions. What would be the first step on using this map which is 1:50,000 scale?

First thing is to take the sections you want to use and size them to fit in FPC. 500 meters per hex.

I'll see if I can dig out the 1:50,000 maps I have.

May take a while to scan in though.

For an easy way to make a hex grid overlay to a scanned map I've been using the board/map making part of Vassal.

It's pretty easy to use and is quite good if you want to make fine adjustments to the hex grid.

Ok - found the 1:50,000 maps (I'd filed them 'securely' away so took a bit of finding [;)])

The maps I have join up to the Fulda map JohnO has posted above.

The maps are:
L5122 Neukirchen
L5124 Bad Hersfeld
L5126 Eisenach West
L5320 Alsfeld
L5322 Lauterbach (Hessen)
L5324 Hunfeld

I'll get scanning...

I'll scan the maps but won't try and join up the individual scans to make a whole map. I can never seem to get that right so I'll leave it for better people than me to do that bit.

Cheers,

B

PS - Oh yeah, they're all dated 1982-ish.

I've scanned L5124 Bad Hersfeld in and loaded/am loading it up to SkyDrive (taking a while).

Try this link here...
http://sdrv.ms/LlnbSn

Hopefully you should be able to view the pics and right-mouse-click->Save picture as?

I've scanned at 300dpi which makes the individual scans a bit big.

I might size them down for the next map.

PS - they're also a bit 3D-ish and the hills show up great [:)]

Just noticed that JohnO's Fulda map is probably 1:100,000?

The 1:50,000 maps I have will cover the top 2/3rds of JohnO's map and go up ~2/3rds again and go east a bit more and west a bit more to Alsfeld.

Ooh it'd be good to get these all scanned in [:)]

No, the map I have is and I quote from the top part of the map 1:50 000 Topographische.

Here is my link to my dropbox that has the map so anybody can download it to save.

Fulda Map

also just to add, I have over 31 maps 1: 50,000 that was used during REFORGER 85, they are all scan, just need to type out the names to the maps.

Here is what the map can look like in game (slightly de-saturated, so the foreground icons stand-out better). It sadly lacks Kerzell and Poppenhausen area in south of the map, so it doesn't fully cover the game's Fulda map.

The discrepancy with the underlying hex-based engine starts when you start plotting movements. Otherwise it looks interesting (and a bit confusing).

I also prefer the real maps, with TacOps my favorite were the topo maps, specially Friedrik's three Fulda maps.

If I was going to use them I'd probably take the map grid off.
