Sub-operations

Post by Badan »

Hello!

I bought the game about a week ago, and I can´t get my hands off the computer because of it!!

I have a couple of questions concerning the most effective use of submarines. I like to play as the IJN, with sub doctrine on.

So, the question is, can I designate some larger area for my submarines to patrol (when set on computer control), like assigning patrol coordinates.
How does the AI react and vector boats to intercept if it gets enemy convoy reports from maritime patrol aircraft?
And last, I have not yet encountered any submarine/aircraft engagements, how should I use my ASW-patrol aircraft?

Thanks again for this great game!

Heya Badan. Welcome to UVs Anonymous... :D

Subs: no, you can't set a patrol area for subs on computer control. You can tell them where to head, but they'll sidetrack based on their commander, damage, intel, etc. They will generally head to the best spot for targets (the AI's decision, of course), but I find that I usually have to re-order them elsewhere. I generally don't use this.

ASW patrols: a/c have to have a fairly high level of experience to accomplish this well. If they're higher (80s+) you'll start seeing fairly consistent "attack reports" during the replay. Also, the odds increase if you lower the altitude (if exp > 70, lower alt to 100 feet -- yep, one-hundred). I also generally put the whole squadron on patrol (100 percent) if I notice subs around. Watch the fatigue, though. Don't want that going high.

Hello again!

Thanks Toro!

Ok, so I have to get the flight-hour´s of my ASW pilots up...
I should do that with all my pilots, because on saturday I just got one of my carrier air wings shot to pieces because of low experience...

Well, I did learn something about sending green pilots into combat!!!

Mate.....sometimes you just don't have the choice........besides, all those pilots are drawing flight pay, so make the buggers work for it! And as a bonus, those that make it will rack up the exp points REAL fast:D

Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Troop Transport

Post by Califvol »

Regardless of side use Subs as a troop transport to seize undefended bases. Not too much reality in the act, since they seem unable to reload unless its a port. But this is a great game option.

Also, since you don't load a full unit onto a sub, if the enemy rubs the unit out they will come back as reinforcements anyway.
Why am I sharing my opinion? Because I am such a special snowflake that others need my knowledge. What…there are like a billion snowflakes? Oh, well isn't that special.

Greetings, again!

I have not tried the sub troop transport mission yet! Sounds quite good...
Sad though, that covert sub landings on deserted beaches are not possible, because of the required ports! I do not know how common these operations were in the Pacific theatre, but a sub makes a great platform for launching landing site and target recon missions.

By the way, does anybody know if there will be modifications to the submarine element in patch 2.0?

That is all for today, folks!!

subs and ports

Hi, A sub transporting infantry does not need a port to unload. They can unload on enemy dots. (and then the infantry captures the hex. (If a base is empty you do not need very many troops to capture it. (however then you still need to run fast transports or floatplanes to bring in more supply and engineers to actually build anything)

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
