More supply problems

Post by joshuamnave »

I had another supply issue in China with an HQ out of supply that should not have been. I tried picking it up and dropping it, and picking it up and hitting esc, which used to fix the problem. When that didn't work, I saved and tried to reload the game, but got an error message when opening the save file. I exited wif, and tried reloading again, and this time it worked - and restored supply to the HQ. The issue happened in a location not previously affected by the supply bug, so I'm uploading the save.

Note that opening the save file will put the units back in supply, so not sure how valuable the file will be. The HQ is on the rail line north of Sian.

This is in 1.1.6.2

Steve still needs to wrap up the last couple of supply bugs. I think he worked day and night to get the last release to us, and needs some rest. As he is now totally "in" supply code I hope he is able to tackle the last minor (?) ones as well. Difficult decision as folks playing with unlimited breakdown need a fix as well as they can potentially run into a blocking situation when there are 3 different type of divs available to reform. And than there is the need to continously work on Netplay, to let that get some progress.

I would not want to be in Steve's shoe's at the moment. The last week was already difficult for many an active poster and the beta crew, let alone for him.

I expected that you would find the remaining supply issue(s), you are sharp and seem to have plenty of time. After a weekend of testing most of the testers had to give other stuff priority, or need to recouperate from the mess we were in last week.

I have a hunch that the return to base lockup might be supply related as well, since it seems to happen when Japan is returning transports to base. If the supply code had been using those transports to ferry overseas supply, returning them to base would force the code to find new supply routes.

I will need to have a look at that myself to engage in that discussion. It might take some days before I have the time again other than posting a couple of replies. Have spent most of the weekend blocking your hot-fix....[:(], but I am sure that was the right decision.

I've got a single major bug left in Supply and a handful of smaller other ones to investigate more.

The major problem occurs in 4 of the saved games I have collected and pertains to changing secondary supply sources that had been using overseas supply paths. The US capturing Damascus (a Vichy France capital) is one instance. The other 3 concern moving Japanese HQ units in China/Manchuria. As long as the HQ's supply line is overland, things appear to be okay for moving HQs about on the map.

---

I've been up to my neck in supply issues the past 4 or 5 days and have two doctor appointments today. I've spent what time I do have available today bringing my task list up-to-date, rather than working on bugs.

Of the smaller supply bugs, Territorial units belonging to a conquered minor country, and controlled by the conqueror, are not being able to trace supply to the cities in their home country. A bunch of the code was written for that specific situation but it isn't working correctly. Notional units aren't calculating supply correctly once the enemy units arrive in the target hex (by sea or air). I'm pretty sure that's because the presence of the enemy unit is incorrectly blocking the notional unit from tracing a supply path out of the its own hex. There are also 3 saved games in my collection that do not restore because the supply calculations go into an infinite loop. I would like to track down exactly where they get lost; it's possible that those saved games are defective in some way, but I have always tried to make it possible to restore all saved games. Hence my desire to know precisely where the cause of the trouble lies.

I knew about the notional unit bug, but just assumed it was related to the mess in China so I had never mentioned it separately. It sure did make life easy for the Japanese!

Clearing up the overseas supply issues with allied convoys (ie.. German units in NAF) was a pretty big deal and it's great to have that one done. The lingering bugs in China (and as you said, occasionally elsewhere) are much less of an annoyance than they once were, so that's another relief. It'll be great to have the last little bit of supply knocked out so I can go back to hassling you about phantom convoys (and the production planner interface). Bet you can't wait!

On the other hand, you may get a break from my steady stream of bug reports for a bit - an impending death in the family is going to take me out of town for at least several days sometime in the near future.
