Maneuver speed and TF

Post by Yaab »

I am unsure how maneuver ratings for ships are used in combat situations.

In a surface combat TF, when ships duel with enemy ships, do ships maneuver individually or as a group?

If is a group, do they move at the maneuver rating of the least maneuverable ship i.e. 6 DDs and 1 CA move at the maneuver rating of the CA?

And if a TF is attacked by an air raid, do ships in the TF maneuver as group or individually? Aircraft attack individual ship, so I guess each ship uses each own maneuver rating, but I am not 100% sure about this.

The mvr rating/speed of the individual ship is used in terms of evading hits for example. But as soon as a specific action affects the whole TF, such as closing the distace to the enemy TF, or trying to get out of range, the speed of the slowest ship counts (in relation to the slowest ship of the enemy TF, and of course including a couple of other factors).

No, see answer above.

In terms of hit evasion, as in surface combat, the individual ship attributes are the ones that matter.

Of course as the slower ships get sunk, the TF can move faster so has a better chance to get away [:)]

For the uninitiated, the upshot of the above is to be very careful how TFs are constituted. There are many threads here harping on that!!!

@LoBaron
Thank you for the explanation. Saving it in my WITP:AE reference folder.

Now, you slow and clumsy ships, begone from my TFs!

Don't forget the fact that commander ratings, fuel, ammo, damage, weather, and air superiority all may determine how a battle progresses and if one side presses the attack. Speed, while important, is by far not the only factor.
