WitE Not Responding, Game Crash

Post by ladner »

Just about every time I play the game during combat resolution of my turn the game will stop responding. Windows will pop up a message WitE not responding, then the game will crash. My DXDIAG is:

Forgot to add have an ATI Radeon 5700 which has 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM, should be more than adequate to run the game...

I have read through the support forums and have updated my devices drivers. Decided to upgrade to the beta, which seems more stable during combat resolution. Now though the game will crash during the Soviet (AI) turn. Noticed that this has happened before even when playing an 'easy' scenario like the Road to Minks. Any suggestions on what to do?

Is this the only game you have problems with or is your computer unstable in other games as well?
Graphics card should not be stressed much but at minimum one CPU core is under heavy load from the combat and AI calculations. Maybe your CPU is overheating?

You could also try to backup your savegames, uninstall and reinstall WitE, then copy your saves back.
WitE dev team - (aircraft data)
WitE 1.08+ dev team (data/scenario maintainer)
WitW dev team (aircraft data, partial data/scenario maintainer)
WitE2 dev team (aircraft data)

Denniss, thank you for the response, I don't think my CPU is overheating as that would normally cause a shutdown, and lose of the operating system. Only the game application crashes. Managed to finish a couple of turns only to have the game crash while I was trying to save, the crash being the program stops responding and windows eventually shuts down the game.

Dug up some older threads, looks like it is a sound/codec issue. Renamed the sound folder to no sound, was able to play ~2hrs no issue and save without problem. Could not tell from the older thread but does anyone know what sound codec is available and compatible with WitE? I uninstalled a DivX codec, not sure what I need to do, would like to have sound.

Usually the problems with audio / video indicate that you don't have the most up-to-date drivers for your rig!

Have you tried updating the drivers?

Leo "Apollo11"

P.S.
The WitE doesn't use any special codec either for video nor for audio - the clean Windows system should run the WitE without any problems right "out of the box"...

BTW, the WitE sounds are just plain "WAV" files!

Updated drivers, or at least going through control panel indicated that the drivers where up to date. Tried to play with sound, same end result game crash during saving. Guess I'll just have to get used to no sound.

Okay, updated windows media player, went thru Microsoft website, believe I fixed codec issues. Anyhow played for roughly ~1.5 hours, upon trying to save crash. I give up. It is going to have to be silent WitE. I realize there was a post about no longer supporting the game, but it is going to be real hard to justify spending about ~$100 US to buy another Matrix 2by3 game and have physical back up, if you cannot run the software even though I supposedly am within "recommended system" specifications.

Maybe this tool is able to detect and fix the problematic codec.

Thank you, or should I say danke shon? (have an Anglicized keyboard so no umlaut)

Ended up downloading my sound card driver for my motherboard, so far so good. May have to correct my earlier, whiner post since this was clearly operator error. Some how corrupted my prior codecs, think this was due to an HOI 3 mod.

Where did you find official post stating that WitE is no longer supported? [&:]

As for crashing - the WitE is one the the games with almost perfect record... just go through this "Tech Support" thread and look for crash reports from before!

There were just handful of crash reports and almost all of those were related to the state of the PC of the game owner and not to the WitE itself!

BTW, if there is a bug found in WitE that we can determine it crashes the game - it will be fixed (just as it was fixed in all similar rare cases before)...

which is stickied above. Game crashed again, today, this is certainly a codec issue, not the game itself. Have no idea of how to fix at this stage. Have updated all of my device drivers, aside from reinstalling Windows, which will cause massive headaches, cannot get the sound to work. I went to save, the game crashed.

Everyone time there has been a crash one of these logs has been generated, unfortunately I don't know how to decipher this into meaningful information. I agree though, I somehow, broke my codecs, and it is causing the exceptions.

Ahhh... "Elmo" posted that 11 months ago but we released new version WitE v1.07.14 just few days ago... [:)]

So - don't worry about any stop of support for WitE! [:D]

I don't think it is the codec issue wince the WitE uses plain old "WAV" files which are the most uncomplicated sound files that can be... I still think that you have problems with your Windows installation on your PC...

Have you tried:

#1
Updating Windows via "Microsoft update" to latest possible?

#2
Visit the support WWW pages for both your video card (ATI/AMD, nVIDIA) and sound card (motherboard manufacturer)?

Can confirm the issue was codec related was able to determine the codec that was running using Process Monitor (ProcMon) utility. Removed the codec, game has run flawlessly since. For anyone, following this thread, the game is good enough to justify going through the rigmarole of fixing the sound, the game is that good in my opinion. Considering the development team, it would be expected to have a high caliber game.

After a long working week-end on Wite in order to solve this major sound problem, i found the definitive solution with Codec Tweak Tool, whose link is given above.

My game run fine with this setting :
