AI units spot at a distance..

Post by Misconduct »

I've been doing a live game on Steam for some people interested in the game, unfortunately I have been quarked with an unusual problem. My Recon units generally have spotting of 4, however many of the AI seem to see much broader then I can, sometimes as much as 6. I just checked the stats of a Daimler Dingo that has been wrecking my artillery, and it shows a spotting of 3 and no Heroes.

Its getting to be a total pain in the ass having these units just pick me out of thin air without actually spotting me, is this part of the AI?

Did the AI fly any planes or have any cities nearby?

None, open desert - nothing around it for 6 hexes only an Italian port.

Nope, I thought I saved the turn where I first started suspecting foul play, but I couldn't figure it out. Unfortunately I will have to wait until I see it again.

Whats interesting is I checked for Heroes, there were none- unless I can't see the AI heroes? What's interesting is the Heroes don't boost the stats of the vehicle, so I have to check the vehicle (For example recon spotting range of 3) then count the Heroes bonus with that.

If you were not attacked how do you know you were spotted?

I had to use Fog of war cheats to get a picture of the unit so I could calculate the distance it traveled, 6 being its max, unfortunately I was fed up with this campaign and decided to end it.

I just edited the scenario in question, there are no Heroes for any of the Daimler Dingo's, I checked the one in question - nothing special, its max range is 6 per turn and spotting range of 3. The Artillery piece in question - had no enemy air units around it, or vehicles. It was late catching up to the main group, so it was hung back, the Daimler Dingo in question, was actually going to capture one of my cities - instead it bolted north 6 hex's to attack my artillery unit.

How it seen it? No clue, I'm puzzled.

It might be designed that way to help the AI out, not sure why its that way considering the Colonel difficulty increases the strength of the enemy units along with experience, it doesn't need to see 6 freaking hexes away when my best can see only 4.

I usually don't get to play more then 5-6 scenarios before losing eventually.

I haven't had an experience like you, much on the contrary I realized you can trap an AI unit. Say you figured out the AI's fog of war so you know which units the AI "can see". Then you put a lone bomber in his line of vision and place some fightercover next to it, just in the AI's fog of war. Usually the AI falls into that trap.

Oh hang on just reread your question, is that Dingo capable of doing two moves? Or move-attack-move? That might be the answer right?

That could be it, it moved towards the city and spotted the artillery unit and decided it was a better target.
