The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Post by blackcloud6 »

This only my third playing (and one was the tutorial) of the game, so I'm a noob. I posted this on my Consimworld blog this evening and thought I'd cross post it here:

I just got done getting my butt handed to me in Flashpoint Campaigns playing the Germans in a scenario called "The Pied Piper." The Germans are to prevent the Soviets from getting the bridges over the Weser at Hamelin. They start with a Leopard Company and a Panzergrenadier Company (Marders) and will receive an artillery Bn and another Leo Co and Pzrgrn Co. The idea is to screen and fall back to the defense. There is an obstacle line forward and you are allowed to wether set up behind it or defend Hamelin. I chose to strta forward and try to fall back as the commies approached.

Boy did they come on fast. they found a gap in the obstacle belt (it was pre-set up), exploited it and got two T-80BV companies between my screening units by the second hour of the fight. Those overran my TOC, killing me and moved on down the valley to Hamelin.

I tried to pull back both companies but the Panzergrenadiers got decisively engaged and overrun. The Leos made it back and tried to get into a position to flank fire on the advancing commie tanks but they got clobbered by being outnumbered. My reinforcements arrived and set up a desperate defense of the bridges and a knife fight ensured in Hamlein. But my losses went to take me below 30% strength and the game ended on the "Sudden Death" conditions.

I was impressed by how well the AI acted. It was aggressive, sought out weakness and exploited it. It was cool to watch even though I got clobbered. It is going to take some learning on how to fight outnumbered and win in this game. It is not easy.

The actual game plays much faster than the demo. I am so far quite impressed. This may be the best computer wargame to come along in awhile.
