I wish that I could forget that! [:D] But what really disturbs me , is that none of the articles about this , or even comments on them , referred to NERD. To me , this is the biggest Navy inside joke since CINCUS. (For those non USN speakers , Commander in chief , US fleet was Adm Kimmel's designation. Adm King changed it right after Pearl Harbor. In "Navalese" CINCUS is pronounced SINK US.).[X(][:(][:D]

So does the officer in charge of issue and accounting this new naval wonder , take on as a collateral duty "NERD co-ordinator"? Or perhaps , to borrow from the computer world , NERD master? [X(]

People who receive this , are they known as "NERD qualified"? "Have you been issued your NERD"? "I am in charge of all the NERDS on the USS Neversail!". (That will look great on a fitness report". Just like PO Smith was personally responsible for over 200 NERDS on this ship". Who came up with this name? And who picks the books that go on it?


Frankly , except for comedians , I don't think too many people will be crazy about this program. The Navy can't afford libraries , but they spend the money to come up with this stuff. To paraphrase comedian Mark Russell , "It makes a fellow proud to be a sailor!". [:D]

When I was at OCS there was a Friday CDO room inspection, for which one could get demerits and be assigned "marching tours" on Saturday in lieu of liberty in Newport. The report form included a line item called "NRDL." "Non-regulation dust or lint." (I never saw regulation dust or lint, even once.)

You guessed it: "NERDLEs."

Sure. All you do is either enlist and finish Great Lakes, or apply for a commission and go to OCS,OIS or some kind of direct commissioning program. And then sign a blank check to uncle sam , then you too can have a NERD designator or a NEC for NERD OPS. Heck with your background , they'll put you in charge of the program. [:D]

[:D] Some of us can do a turn in less than 3 days because we don't check every insignificant mess cook detachment to ensure that they are 100% prepared for some desolated insignificant place that no one cares about. Some of us think "good enough". [:D]

It's not just the Navy. A few years ago there was a problem with the term "Devil Dog" was beginning to take on negative connotations, because NCO's used it to address junior enlisted/non-rates Marines when they corrected them.

E.g. "Hey Devil Dog, get over here. So Devil, you just lose your military bearing? You know you're not supposed to be diddy boppin' around the area with your hands in your pockets! You think you're in the Army or some Sh*t? You best square yourself away Devil! Come see me after evening formation, I have some extra duty for you to make sure you don't forget. You clear on that Devil Dog?

Well because "Devil Dog" was supposed to be a term of pride, associated with the 5th and 6th Marines at Belleau Wood in WWI, the Marine Corps was concerned that the term would become one of derision. Some idiot officer at Headquarters Marine Corps decided that they would issue an ALMAR instructing NCO's and Officers to no longer use "Devil Dog" as a term to address a junior enlisted Marine in negative situations. The new authorized term was to be Junior Enlisted Warrior. The officer who came up with the idea didn't think far enough ahead to realize what the initials spelled and that invariably the term would be shortened to it's initials. It was quickly, unauthorized.

In the current USAF/USA a person who comes up with "ideas" like that is called a "a good-idea fairy". Seriously. [:D]
