Give them Hell, 2008 (in Progress)

Post by Kitchens Sink »

After using a Hawkeye to search in vain for the Kuznetsov Carrier group (given in the briefing to be somewhere off the coast of Syria), I did what any good wargamer would do...I cheated and opened up the Scenario Editor to find it. It turns out the Kuznetsov and it's escorts are all the way across the globe off the coast of Australia. I don't think they could make it on to the battle scene in time for the scenario time to run out. Just as well, I didn't want to mess with it anyway.

This is a community scenario so you can't really bang on the author them like you can us.

I imaging contacting him via PM probably a little nicer than embarrassing him on the web forum over stupid stuff.

Thanks!

My apologies. It could be that the group is exactly where the author intended it to be. Also, I had no idea that there was the ability to PM anybody. Please delete the post and thread if you find it offensive.

It's probably a situation where the ship teleports into the action after a trigger or time event.

After further play, I now understand that the Scenario Briefing was exactly correct. Bravo to the author. This one is a challenge.

Well I fired two salvos of TLAMs, expending all of them, and was able to get "Russian declare ceasefire", score 635 Triumph, before the convoy even entered the Black Sea.

I rebased all of Hornets to Cengiz Topel though; never really noticed anything about Russian surface group in the briefing. I need to pay more attention next time perhaps.

Anyway Russians did not held their ceasefire, so I play on.

At what did you launch those Tomahawks? You didn't blow all those Russian airbases to stone age, did you? In that case, congratulation on starting the third world war [:D]

I don't think you are supposed to attack Russian bases, that would be too easy victory. While not explicitely mentioned in briefing, there is a clause about avoiding any operation in, under or over the Russian sovereign territory, airspace or waters, and that IMO rules out a massive tactical missile attack. I confess that the idea of TLAM strike never crossed my mind at any point during playing - the mission is to escort a humanitarian convoy from point A to point B without using an excessive force.

Sure I observed where Russian flights originate from and then shoot the hell out of these bases with TLAMs. Darn, they launched their bombers and Kitchens or whatever on me. In my strategy, achieving air superiority is always the first point. Over the years of playing Harpoon, I figured this is best done by disabling airbases, situation permitting. Works fine in Command too.

After some nasty bug was fixed in 1.07 RC1, I was finally able to complete the scenario, with very little of the Russian force left.
