Air base/carrier space

Is the space available on a base or carrier based on the cumulatve area of each hangar and open parking, or is there an abstract game function that states the number of aircraft that fits in a particular size?

Example:
1 small aircraft in small hangar/open parking
2 small aircraft in medium hangar/open parking
3 small aircraft in large hangar/open parking

it pretty much works this way.
