Plane ugrades

Post by Widi »

Need a little help here . . .

Does anything upgrade TO the P-40? I have a ton of P-40s in the replacement pool but not a single P-39, P-400 or Wirraway squadron has, as yet, upgraded.

Is there a list somewhere that reveals upgrade paths? I've searched this site for a post on such but have found none.

The P-39D Airacobra upgrades to the P-40E Kittyhawk.

Check the subdirectory "Manuals" in your UV directory. You'll see a PDF file for a/c upgrade paths.

There's 2 types of P39D's apparently, one upgrades to the P38G Lightning - in fact most of the airgroups (at least in Scen 17) go that path.
The other goes to the P-40E Kittyhawk.

Since at the end of my Scen 17 game I'd had no replacement aircraft used from the second P39D pool (it's at the very end of the replacement screen) and I had every P39D that could fly to PM defending it (and thus being shot down a lot) then to me it seems you don't get many of the second type :/

Can anyone clerify the upgrade thing for me? The manual says that you need 125% of the upgradable plane in the pool, but 125% of what? The planes in the squadron that is due to be upgraded?

It's 125% (japan) or 133% (allied) of the new aircraft type above the max number of aircraft allowed in a squad.

So if you have a squad of 24 P-400's you'll need 32 P-39D's before the game will upgrade them.

This doesn't mean you lose the extra aircraft, it only takes away 24 for the upgrade - the rest are left in the pool.

Consider it a threshold that must be passed before an upgrade will take place, as soon as you have enough they should upgrade.

It also doesn't matter what state the existing airgroup is in (so it can have 4 planes left and still upgrade), similarly the current state of the airgroup doesn't affect how many planes it needs to upgrade.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for this cogent response, Deathifier! I finally understand how this works now.
