Unable to make peace

I was at war with one empire, which I proceeded to invade and wipe out. However, the game still thinks I am at war with them and the war weariness is now crippling, and I can't find any way to make peace with a non-existent empire. Is there anything I can do to salvage this game?

Is the empire really gone or are they still in the diplomatic menu? If the second they have at least a construction ship or something. If the rules are the same as for pirates an empire is alive if they have a way to construct anything.[:)]

They were utterly gone from the diplomacy screen. I switched governments and let it run at 4X for quite a while and it eventually fixed the situation -- I'm not sure how, but at least my game is back to normal. Thanks.
