Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
Hi all.
Had this idea while reading about one of my all-time favorite sims, Falcon 3.0.
What would you say about a Command scenario series based on the F3 campaign missions?
The F3 missions start off simple, with easy objectives and limited opposition, and gradually build up in difficulty as they require the player to coordinate larger numbers of aircraft against much tougher enemies. Indeed the more difficult missions require much more in terms of flight planning and in-flight coordination rather than individual flying skill.
Doesn't this sound like a very attractive way to teach AAW "from beginner to expert" in Command?
My first instinct was to do this myself but my Command plate is enormous enough as-is. So I'd be happy to delegate this to one or more volunteers.
Any takers?

RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
It's been a long time since I played F3. I did once consider building an air tutorial but then you guys did. This does sound interesting and something I might wanna do or help with if it's a multi person effort. Only thing is that of course work can keep me busy (although I do have some time this week) and Red Flag 17 needs tweaking and I was gonna make Red Flag 2020.
But back to what I said in the first sentence: can you refresh my memory on the campaign buildup?

Great idea.
The old classic games has many good scenarios. It will be very interesting to see them in CMANO.

I only played Falcon 4 (and loved it for the campaign). Is there a link to this article or a deeper description about the F3 campaign?
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
I played some Falcon 3.0 back in the day, I'll have it somewhere around so i will try to take a look what it encompasses. [8D]
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
I'm interested, just need a bit more to go on. I was ten when I played it. I vaguely recall panama and Nevada but not what it was all about lol Or I can just come up with something
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
Falcon 3? You guys do know that there is an awesome mod for F4 that is working quite good and stable, and also looks pretty good, right?

The idea is that the creator(s) first play the mission in F3 to get the info and then precisely recreate it in Command.
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
Hmm, i just checked. There are missions flown every say six hours (making that four missions per day). The campaigns last two and half day or so (there's Israel, Kuwait, Panama, etc.). One campaign would have around 10-12 missions i guess. I assume that player would be advancing to next mission, only if his previous one ended successfully. Hard work to do is to copy the mission parameters/briefings/etc and do the INTEL on unit positions on the maps.
There were some so-called campaign editors for Falcon 3.0, which would allow to copy the missions and OOB somehow, but i can't find any at this moment.

Copy! In that case I guess count me out as I do not have the software and even if I did probably not the time to both fly the missions in there and then build them here.
Would you be upset if I do steal the idea of making a different set of increasing complexity air warfare scenarios? Will probably be a while before I do so anyway if i first focus on my previous projects.
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
Feel free. F3 came to mind because the missions are so nicely balanced in their rising difficulty/complexity curve.
The nice thing about copying an existing "scenario" is that you avoid the pitfalls of feature/complexity creep.

I've bandied the idea of doing scenarios based on the old Strike Commander scenarios...

I'd really really really love to see some campaign like this.

Ugh! I feel that playing Falcon 3 now will ruin all my fond memories of all those countless hours spent in LAN, on that state of the art combat flight sim. I just watched some YouTube clips of it, and the game somehow now really looks dreadful. I guess I will keep those memories safe in a special place in my heart together with Gunship on the C64 and Longbow 2 on the PC. In my mind, those games back then, was as good as the DCS titles are today
Great idea and good luck!
RE: Idea: Falcon 3.0 campaign scens
I don't know Falcon 3 well enough to comment on the scenarios, but I think the general idea makes a great deal of sense. Each game or scenario will have certain nuances that may or may not translate well, of course, but that's to be expected.
I do have one small concern. It's one thing if a person makes a Command scenario based on a Falcon 3 scenario and just passes it around to their friends, but can a scenario like that be added to the Community Scenario Pack? Does "publishing" it in a "public" forum that way violate anyone's intellectual property rights? I suppose it depends a lot on the nature of the source material and I very much doubt anyone is going to get sued over this, especially if the original scenario is credited, so it does not look like anyone is having their work stolen, but you never know, so I thought I should at least mention that it might be an issue.

Along with the idea of using Falcon 3 as source material, I am surprised more old Harpoon scenarios have not been turned into Command scenarios. Between Harpoon Classic and Harpoon 3/ANW, there are hundreds of scenarios. Again, I'm not sure who owns what, if one needs permission to do this and post them to the Community Scenario Pack, etc., but there's a lot of good stuff out there.
