General Patton is Spinning in HIS Grave...

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

General Patton is Spinning in HIS Grave...

Post by Werewolf13 »

It's been a while since I've played CO but with the latest update to 279 it was decided to get back into the thick of things.

Decided to start with the St. Vith tutorial. Figured it would be a good refresher scenario. Yep! It was a good scenario but hardly a refresher. The AI stomped my Allied behind into the mud, and left a bunch of blood and guts behind.

By the end of the 1st day (midnight) the 318th Inf Bn had successfully crossed that 1st bridge but was bogged down and refused to move. The 51st Mech Inf Bn was plastered by German artillery and the Bn HQ disintegrated. The 35th Armored Bn - which I ordered to assault across the bridge and up the road did a wide end around (never ever saw that type of attack planned by the AI before) to attack the Germans holding up the 318th from the north and into their rear. It got handed its ass by some pretty determined Bosche and two companies disintegrated into thin air - poof - gone.

I called it quits (what a wimp). Then I sat back in my chair and wondered just what the hell had happened since in the 5 or 6 times I'd played the St Vith scenario before I'd gotten no less than a marginal and 3 times a decisive victory over the Germans and it hadn't been hard.

If Patton's ghost was hanging around I'm confident that he'd have slapped me silly and if he'd had his pearl handled pistols handy he'd of shot me down on the spot for sheer incompetence.

Good job on the update CO Devs... I can't recall ever having been so surprised and having had my mauled rear end handed to me by an AI in 35 years of playing wargames on a PC. I've been beaten by AI's before but never in such a humiliating manner.
Freedom is not free! Nor should it be. For men being men will neither fight for nor value that which is free.

Welcome back Wolf.
Keep persevering mate, you'll soon be rolling them Sherman's through the streets of St Vith.
Don't forget to give them some infantry support in the built up areas though [;)]

Patton was chagrined, but it was because Montgomery's 21st AG was in command of the First Army and the St. Vith defensive position.
Take care,
