Has anyone EVER shot down one of those annoying Allied recon planes

Post by Cap Mandrake »

Is there ANY way to eliminate that annoying Allied Recon group in Scenario 17? I forget the designation (? B5 ...looks a little like a P-38 in profile). Worr keeps buzzing Rabaul with the darn thing, and everytime my fighters rise fruitlessly to meet it (causing fatigue no doubt). I can't just stand down my fighters either because he brought in Curtis LeMay to pester Rabaul with 17's. Just the annoying buzzing sound of that solo recon plane's engines makes me want to throw the speaker across the street

And don't give me some kind of wiseaker answer like..."well just capture PM". I want a simple solution :)

Hi, Turn the sound off.....No those recon planes are P-38's (the recon version F-5) If your CAP is at the right altitude you can sometimes shoot down a recon plane. But this group wears out really fast on it's own. (LOL)

Recon Planes

Mogami is right about that!

The first time I used those F-5s, I left them on missions continuously for about 3 weeks. When I finally got back to checking them, the squadron was down to about 4 aircraft.

Wow, I always leave them on and never had a problem.... but I agree, that darn camera sound drives me bonkers.

I lost an F-5 yesterday. Don't know if it was an operation loss, or because there was CAP there (which there was). He made his report tho, so I'm guessing he fell asleep on the way home (dumb-***).

I actually -DO- use those recon planes alot. And while I hadn't thot about it, if they're that annoying, I'll be sure to use them more often!

Intel on a base degrades so quickly tho, I want to know what squadrons are where, and if my brother is moving stuff around. My recon planes get alot of use. I also use the PBYs at high altititude to check on the progress of his AF construction.

I use F-5, PBYs, and B-17 on recon to a specific target and 90% naval search. Don't know if this works but it lets me get intel from several different places. And hopefully a regular naval search function.
I have never shot down a recon A/C but have had several F-5's shot down over Rabaul, I send them in at 30,000 feet.

Flak

Post by mbatch729 »

Occasionally, flak will get one if they are low enough. Lost (and shot down) a few that way. Put some of those high altitiude AAA units there. (Heck, even borrow some German 88's if you can :-)) Even if they don't bring 'em down, the damage they do may cause operational losses on the flight back.

You can get a unit history of those annoying/marvellous (depending on which side you're playing) F-5s here:

While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.
