Wow what a month. I'm not sure I put up as much fight as I could of. But I want to conserve resources for use SOPAC at the end of the year. SWPAC can just sit and wait. I'll harrass shipping to PM and Gili with bombers. And after the move by SOPAC there will be transports for SWPAC to work with.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

OK the carriers ignored my react order. I am going to rest them tonight (and refuel) tomorrow they go out. Reinforcments convince me tha win or lose at Cairns or Cooktown (or both) I can hold Rockhampton and retake Townsville (should tha city fall) before 1 Jan 43. Arto maked me crap my pants more then once. But after examining the situation I think he played his trump card too soon. This adventure is going to cost Japan the campaign if I keep my head and make sure to extract as much as I can. The important thing is after he uses up all his fuel and supply to isolate the invading troops and then kill them. I can then take my time planning my offensives. Of course If/when he captures Cooktown and Cairns he will get the fuel and supply I have been busy moving there.

OK Cooktown was captured but all units had a retreat hex. If Cairns is lost.....Carriers put to sea in 2 TF's. I do not expect a battle tomorrow
(but next day...So the situation is most likely Cairns and Cooktown will be captured. I will lose many troops. Then 2 fresh divisions arrive to hold Japs at Rocktown (or Townsville) If the enemy does not capture Townsville then the whole exercise goes to me. If he does capture Townsville I have a ready made target but I must secure it before Jan 1 43. All in all I am not too worried. It has been a very exciting couple of weeks. The fast Transport TF that arrived in daylight made it so. (had he arrived at night I would have my retreat hex from Cairns.)

Early breakfast for pilots and aircrew...Steak and eggs. Today is the day. If Cairns can hold out (or if the breakout hex battle is resolved first) then I save alot of troops. The carriers will fight today (weather permitting) But after this turn the enemy will beaware of our presence. If we can catch him by suprise tomorrow...well enough about that. All avaiable forces will be engaged in combat tonight or tomorrow during the day. It could be one of the largest combats ever. The enemy has carrier forces at Cooktown (to refuel and replace lost aircraft) and one sitting right at Cairns (waiting for the fuel they'll capture.) The TF that dropped off the troops to clear the road into Cairns has turned around and will bombard the enemy at Cairns (or engage enemy TF's) The carriers are making full steam to be within 4 hexes of Cairns at sunrise.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cairns fell before Innisfail was captured so troops retreated north.
Carrier battle was disappointing. Lexington likely lost Yorktown on fire. and unable to do flight ops. Both remaing carriers retiring to Rockhampton. Japanese LBA likely to finish off other two carriers tomorrow. They are going to try to make port in Townsville.

Engaged 3 IJN CV and 3 CVL (Zuikaku, Shokaku, Kaga, and Akagi where abouts unknown and must be presumed to be heading to engage.)

CV Junyo 3 bomb hits
CV Soryu 1 bomb hit
CV Hiryu 1 bomb hit
CVL Zuiho 3 bomb hits
CVL Ryujo 2 bomb hits
CVL Shoho 1 bomb hit.

IJN likely there fore to have aircombat TF in Morning with Hiryu, Soryu, Shoho plus the 4 missing CV in area. I expect 100+ Betty/Nell to be on Naval attack. Weather forecast is CLEAR so unlikely any TF found will survive. But if Yorktown can be saved and moved to Rockhampton in next few days I will have 3 healthy CV (Saratoga arrives in 14 days) and one damaged to face the 6 IJN CV 1CVL remaining.

Plan for future operations is to move all land units that can be resuced to Townsville for transport back to Brisbane to rebuild. Await the 2 infantry divisions arriving in next 60 days and then mount offensive to regain Cairns and Cooktown. I have to concentrate on retaining Townsville till then. Hopefully Japanese with cease bombardment missions for a few days till they are sure my carriers have departed. When they resume I will engage with surface TF's from Rockhampton (fuel would be depleted from Townsville (in fact I plan on depeleting it so as to not give more away. Cairns had 40+ K of fuel built up (I had planned to base bombardment TF's from there and was stockpiling fuel prior to commencing.
In scen 19 in future I will move all fuel from Cooktown and Cairns and not build airfields or ports till situation safe to do so.

Well see how next few days turn out and then reacess future plans. In SOPAC build up of fuel and supply on L'ville/Efate proceeding un disturbed. Have transfered several oilers to SWPAC to keep Rockhampton supplied with fuel.

A little good news weather prevented enemy airstrikes. Yorktown's airgroups have beed unloaded. The fighters to Charter the SBD to Townsville and Torpedo planes to Rockhampton. I have to start thinking about moving the longer range bombers back to Rockhampton. I need several days to get the CV in condition to move. I fear enemy bombardment TF's I have sent everything to tryto prevent this by surface battle at Cairns. 6 DD going to try to begin moving stranded units below Cooktown back to Townsville.

My poor CA and DD at least Townsville (Lex and YT were spared port attacks) I have to back up and regroup here. There is no need to fight as hard now both cities are gone. Just get the troops back.

Great AAR

Post by Christof »

Hey Mogami,

seems with 200% commitment level for the IJN you have more on your hands than you can handle.
:)

Sad thing Matsanuga got killed just when I thought he might chew up some more Wildcats...
;)

I'm really curious how this one continues... Keep the updates coming - I'm tuned in.
Thank you for a great reading.

I concur, this is great reading!

One question. I don't have the game map in front of me, but I'm wondering: did you need to put your CVs in harm's way? Could you have transferred some or all of their dive-bombers to land bases before engaging the enemy CVs, or were those land bases too full or too distant from the enemy?

Oops, one more newb question: you said your DDs will help evacuate troops. How much can each carry?

Hello to everyone

Post by mogami »

Greetings. I think Arto should make a rare appearance soon to give his view. I can only speak from my impressions since with FOW we never know until the ship is listed what condition it is in.

Questions/Answers (going backwards

Grotius, I considered using the groups from land bases.
However I would need to move the CV to Brisbane or Rockhampton, unload the groups and move them to forward bases.

I have been) and remain) afraid of bombardment attacks on airfields. So if I move my carrier groups to shore bases (I do not repeat every sighting report to AAR, I have been spotting "BB" for many days. I did not want to commitment my CV. But I felt their influence would help the battle too resolve in my favor. I also considered my reinforcement and knew at least 1 CV was enroute.
I do not want to get ahead of myself in posting the results from the battle. However Arto knows (at this point) that 1 USN CV has been lost. I believe 2 IJN CV and 2 IJN CVL have been sunk.
The battle is still in progress. In answer to question
Yes they were too far away, and under attack. I was looking for suprise. Torpedo plane range is 4. Only CV could get me close enough.

Ah, that's what I figured. And of course, I understand why you don't want to disclose too much information to your opponent. Keep us posted as best you can! This is a very entertaining AAR.

CV Hiryu sank at sea today. So results of carrier battle to date: 2US CV badly damaged (Lexington is going to attampt to move to safer port at Rockhampton. Yorktown can only make 6 kt and still might sink in port)
2 IJN CV sunk (Junyo Hiryu) 1 IJN CVL sunk (Zuiho) 1 IJN CVL badly damaged (Ryujo) My two healthy carriers are headed back to Noumea to meet Saratoga when she arrives and refit. Japanese LBA too powerfull in SWPAC and still at least 3 IJN CV at large (known) 2 more unaccounted for
Zuikaku, Shokaku, Soryu, Kaga, Akagi. I will wait for Wasp before trying another carrier battle. I'll see wha the CA and DD can do with bombardment and Fast transport (evac) I would like to reassemble the 7th and 3rd Div at Brisbane to rebuild. The 32nd (US) and 41st (US) div will be on hand by the end of July.

Well Lexington is gone. At least she absorbed attacks that could have went after other ships. If Yorktown survives then I will have to face the fact that Lexington also could have been saved. I thought 11kt would put her out of reach. The TF that sank her was attacked and damaged in return by LBA. Yorktown is still too crippled to consider moving. The IJN BB that caused me to send Lexington to sea never attacked. I am halting all offensive missions and going to only move what people I can back to Townsville or Rockhampton by FT.
(But I am borrowing the Para Marines and a Tank Bn from SOPAC)

Well like most things the actual event is less then what you feared.
IJN BB hit Townsville. Yorktown was not effected by this. So now I think I sent Lex out too soon (right now she would be around 25 flt damage and speed of 15-16kts) OK last time I think of Lexington in this game.
I'll let tomorrow happen and then assign CAP from CT over Townsville.
I'll start moving groups back to Rockhampton that have range to cover TV those that do not will move to CT. Townsville will be left with only a few fighters and after YT and other damaged ships depart Arto can blow it to shreads.

Hey Arto,

it seems the next chapter in the "Japanese Strategy Guide" will be contributed by you...!

Mogami, I'm looking forward to see how the USN will be able to crawl out of this hole. I guess while Arto was so busy in the west you have been brewing something in the Solomons area. Once the IJN runs out of (200%) steam...

Keep the updates coming!

Fresh troops begin arriving Brisane in 2 days. I will leave SOPAC alone for now (except for Paras and Tank Bn) When SOPAC has 1 div to leave on Noumea I will start stealing the troops as they arrive.
I really bungled the defense of OZ, marching and counter marching, now at least 3 Bde that would secure Townsville are scattered from Cooktown down. One tired Bde should make it to Townsville in 1-2 days (called back from end of Highway) I have to start thinking of Yorktowns running for Rockhampton. CL Honolulu running tonight. YT speed only 6kt and Lex was caught when hers was 11.

Well he knocked the fortifcation level down by 2. Hopefully airtransport will repalce my lossess and lower odds to 1-1. (a few 1-1 attacks and we might hold.) 3 CV left Noumea headed back west. I had not wanted to risk them but I think the odds are again acceptable. (if I can arrive unseen.
3 CA 1 CL and 9 DD also headed for Rockhampton. Evac are over (all troops that can not walk to Townsville are gone. I did manage to save the 14th Bde. It is in Rockhampton (well it's flying to Townsville now)
Jeez what can Arto be holding the rest of the South Pacific with? 50k troops on Townsville and more at Cooktown and Cairns. The other bases have to be thin. For this reason I am sending a RCT from Americal to Rockhampton (I could have stolen a Marine Regt) But it will require at least a week to arrive.

Well I lost the tank Bn in Transit, If I had placed the TF on do not retire it would have arrived Rockhampton safely, the time lost when it retired and then turned around. My CV are going to try to bounce the enemy tomorrow. Yorktowns fate is tied to that of Townsville. If the city falls she is destroyed, but I know she could not make it to Rockhampton (esp with enemy CV about to bomb there. Arto looks to be trying to cut off reinforcemnt from SOPAC)

He had to have stripped every single other base of troops to support that attack. Can you take advantage of that somehow?
I love it when a plan comes together.

Has the IJN player made his move to soon? Why not wait till after 1/1/43 and get an IJN Auto victory with the attacks on Australia?

Nice carrier action Mogami!
Seems Akagi, Kaga and Zuikaku are gone and the IJN carrier airgroups badly depleted. "Little Midway" could have saved the day...

Nah, with you it is going to be looooonnnnnnngggggggg and sssslllloooooooowwwwww. Besides which I consider Australia a "Bridge Too Far". In the south pacific, the IJN has closer supply bases (and more of them if he has planned well), than in the south west, which has ONLY PM and Gilli Gilli (which is easy to close with sub wolfpacks), both of which are readly open to fleets of B-17s and B-24s.

I had to send the surface forces to Townsville simply to engage the IJN ships building up there. I can not permit them to begin bombarding Rockhampton (no doubt they will still do so but with reduced numbers.
The fall of Charter Towers brings the Japanese offensive to an end.
They have captured the last base I choose to defend. I have nearly 5 1/2 months to recapture Townsville. The first thing is to stabilize the situation. The Japanese carrier fleet has been badly damaged. SHip lossess for both sides are roughly equal.

USN ships lost 50 points 1630 IJN (known) ships lost 45 points 1801

The Japanese surface fleet remains a powerfull force. To retake Townsville I will need to achive a more powerfull force.
Also further movement of enemy troops to Australia myst be halted.
It is going to be an exciting battle. But if the auto victory can be prevented the Allies will be in much better shape in 43 then I could have hoped. The Japanese recieve many extra formations in scenario 19 so I must go after their ability to transport them safely.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
