Where'd my saved games go? (2.1)

Post by Toro »

Will 2.1 see 2.0 games? My saved games screen is completely blank (ie, no saved games showing at all).

PLease, we asked you to do so also, read the PDF coming with the download:

From David´s release note post and the PDF
Saved Games: Campaigns that were started with version 2.0 or earlier can be played with version 2.10. There may be some bugs, however, caused by database changes and the first turn in version 2.10 may have some problems. The VCR replay for the first turn played in the new version may have errors. After that, everything should be ok.

To convert old files to the new format, used in version 2.0, you just need to rename them.
1) The autosave in slot zero should be renamed uv000_autosave.uvs
2) The combat vcr replay in slot one should be renamed uv001_combatsave.uvs
3) The other files should be renamed, using the following convention:

uvxxx_scen.uvs where xxx is the slot number

This will cause the saved game to show up in the saved game list of the game. You should then load the game with some meaningful comment. When you look in the saved game folder, you will see the game you saved, with the slot number and the comment you assigned, such as:

UV004_Carrier Battle.UVS

this should aid in saved game management.

Sorry Marc. Didn't see a note to do this.

Thanks.

I hesitate to write this (having gotten a bit scolded previously :D ), but that didn't work. All files renamed as requested, and still nothing is showing in my saved game list.

I'll try a complete reinstall, see what turns up...

Toro,
Did you have any luck with this? My saved game files disappeared too. I saved a fresh turn from an e-mail, then renamed it using the naming convention in the PDF with the patch and nothing has appeared. I started a test game, and saved it to to see what the game called it, and then duplicated that on the turn I'd been sent and still nothing. Anyone else having this problem, or had it and can offer any advice.

Thanks,
IronDuke.

saves don't show

No go. I've renamed all files, and they don't appear in my saved games listing. Completely blank.

Here's the renames in case you're wondering:

UV000_AUTOSAVE.UVS
UV001_COMBATSAVE.UVS
UV002_SCEN.UVS
UV003_SCEN.UVS
UV010_SCEN.UVS
UV015_SCEN.UVS
UV016_SCEN.UVS
UV018_SCEN.UVS

Running XP svc pack 1
P4 1.7g
512 RAM

Toro,

Check the "name changing problems" thread a few below this one started by Luskan. I just followed Marc's instructions on that thread and just got it to recognise one of my files, I reckon it'll solve your problems. I think we're not changing the .Dat to .UVS. Your renaming your files but accidentally renaming them #####uvs.dat

I'm probably not too clear, but the thread will explain all.

Good luck.

IronDuke.

Thanks ID. Took Marc's advice and decided to display the hidden extensions... much easier, since I couldn't recall how to handle blank spaces in directory names via DOS (it's been far too long since I've built my own batch files :) ).

I run UV off of Win98 and for some reason, despite the name and extension change, Windows continues to consider the *.UVS file a "DAT" file and therefore doesn't show up.

Quick fix is to go to the savegame directory for UV in Windows Explorer.

Then go to the Start button in Windows and go to "Run"

From there type "Command" (this will bring up an MS-DOS window already in the save game directory.

Type 'DIR' to bring up the files. Once you've id'd the file you want to change, at the command prompt type 'rename file.DAT UV001_filename.UVS'

Tried it and it worked for me. Strange that the renaming of the file ext. did not work in windows. Strange OS :)

Don't know if this is relevant, but is the file name case sensitive (the uvxxx bit)? I renamed mine in Win98 by clicking on the file name, with 'uv' in lower case, and had no problem (although you get a warning that changing the extension may make the file unusable, which you have to accept)

Need Help with Saved Game Files

Post by Michael Walker »

Could someone from Matrix who is reading this please post a follow up on how to rename save game files? I have read the PDF files and all of this thread, I've also tried for nearly an hour to get a working file converted to no avail. I have 3 pending games with lots of time invested, I hope this isn't a lost cause. I am running Win 2000 if that is important.

Thanks,

Mike

Suggestion, Mike:

It may have to do with the file extension. The Windows default view in Explorer won't show the file extension. You may need to change the view setting to show extensions, then change the whole file name. If you change the name without changing the extension, the old ".dat" will remain and UV will not recognize it. I learned this the hard way.

Hope this helps.

In "MyComputer" or the "Windows Explorer" just go to:

Tools -> Folder Options -> View

There uncheck "Hide extensions for known files types"

And é voila your able to edit even the file type .

note: the path above is from WindowsXP. The path might by slighty different on other OSs. But you get the idea.
