Assuming you get to similar situations as occurred in reality, and if you planned to wage these wars of strategic destruction: yes. Japan more so than England. I have found the naval strangulation easier to achieve than the aerial...but that may just be me.

Most things are depicted in the game - strategic bombing and the U-boat war being two examples. However, PLEASE do not expect some sort of detailed representation of these aspects. If you do you will be disappointed. MWIF is a strategic level game,

That said, you can choose how much effort to put into buying subs and bombers, but remember, doing so comes at the cost of something else.Everything in MWIF has a cost attached, every action, every decision. Its such a beautiful game - did I mention that already? [:D]

I do not think historically that Japan was reduced to ruble until late 44. Now by wars end there was nothing left to bomb.... Germany was a different story.
I wonder if sub technology or a late or none Europe centric US entry would be enough to cripple England....
I cannot surprise myself but as soon as multi player is a reality these must be tested!
I admit to being somewhat envious of the guys who played the board game prior

There is no R&D in WiF.

The US gets one A-Bomb in the Jan/Feb 45 turn and it takes one turn to build. The Germans can build V-1s and V-2s and they get the Me262. There are kits with better German subs (the snorkel subs), but I don't recall them being available in MWiF.

Even Japan gets some nifty fighters in '45 but seldom can build them because they're on the ropes by then.

Also, every year the force pool additions give players better units they can build. That's a simulation of R&D too...

yep...
If we redid this with a huge budget then I could see a card system.. but seriously seems this labor of love is playable without chioces in r and d

for instance the US cannot forgo the manhatten project and divert tons of r and d spent there to other areas... no worries

The airwar did not strangle the British economy. The sub war could.
In my games, I'm always exceedingly warry, and I build a continuous flow of as much as 4 convoys each turn untill at least 42. Without this (which the British failed to do historically), you can get in dire trouble!*
In my current AAR, Italy once succeeded in vacating the Cape St Vincent area from most (all ?) convoys. There was an additional impulse and the Commonwealth could send reserves (not enough though, and the missing part had to be filled up by stored oïl ; but there's only that much...)
A long time ago, I was more careless, and here is what happened: convoys to Britain mostly cut, very few convoy reserves => next turn prodcution awfull => cuts down on your gearing limits => you take ages to recover from one such blow!

For Japan, its a big yes: you can usually strangle the Japanese economy which is almost fully dependent on one sea area... Of course, it is not immediate, and requires lucky shots, which you get at some point. Then, whenever the US feels confident enough to send their fleet there, the Japanese economy is toast.

For Germany, the air war can be quite effective, but it doesn't show as much because it is a trickle every turn. But bleeding hurts. I don't have the tables here, but a lancaster can take about 0.5 production point a turn. If you have 8 of them, that makes a loss of 4. If the US follows up, that could conceivably make 8. That may count as a significant share of the German production. But don't be fooled: that won't win the war for you!
Most importantly, having a strategic threat is enough to force the German to keep an appropriate air cover : these fighters are not on the front lines bothering your bombers! Your German enemy will always be worried of you pilling up 25+ unopposed stratbombing points, and risk the loss of factories.

In my current experiences, UK tends to build lots of convoys in the first turns (Especially as the '39 Units are not that great) so that they can deepen in the Atlantic their convoy pipeline once France falls (avoiding Bay of Biscay) and have ample reserves to keep the production going.

My current opponent builds for pratically 2-3 turns and a half -only- convoys.
But then paired up with the massive naval superiority of the Royal Navy he's pratically boxed from attacks - of which anyhow can easily replace as it has 100% production.

Michael has betaversion 1.2.2.1 in which there is a nasty regression problem. This version will not see public daylight and proves the value of beta testers like Bo and others. Bo found it first and should receive the compliments..[;)]

Does this raise any familiar thoughts?

Thank you AxelNL for the compliment, I am not as good as you and other testers are in finding a lot of bugs, but I can find the ones that blow up my computer [:D].

Do you think Steve can straighten out that track Dabrion [:D] That track looks like the ones that General Sherman made neckties out of in his march from Atlanta to the Sea in the American civil war [;)]

Which Version?

Post by Omnius »

michaelbaldur,
Which version has this critical bug destroying naval units and convoys? I just upgrade to the public beta 1.215 update to overcome a territorial reinforcement placement problem that it passed with flying colors.

I sure hope Numdydar is correct since I love the strategic sub war.

AxelNL,
Thanks for allaying my fears to having just upgraded to the public beta 1.215.
