Missiles flying through terrain?

Post by CV32 »

Playing Northern Fury - H Hour, with v1.04 build 554.

Commanding a pair of Norwegian missile craft, I popped out of a deep and narrow fjord on the Northern Cape to ambush some Soviet Osa missile craft to my east with Penguin.

Ducked back into the fjord after releasing missiles, hoping to take advantage of the terrain to shield any counter-attack.

(This is the kind of modeling that makes CMANO attractive, imho).

Unfortunately, my strategy didn't work out. Another Soviet group off to the northwest counter-fired with SS-N-9 Sirens. These missiles came in at 200 feet, passed through the wall of the 600 ft high fjord and somehow found my missile craft deep inside. Essentially acting as if the terrain wasn't there at all. Very disappointing.

I don't have a savegame but I imagine the behaviour is repeatable.

Hmmm I'm 150% sure I fixed this quite some time ago.

Maybe you're using an older version of the scenario that runs with an outdated database? Pretty certain this was caused by a database error and was fixed last winter [8D]

Can you please download Command 1.05 and grab the latest scenarios here:

Thanks! [8D]

I just reinstalled the game within the past week or so, applied the update and then grabbed that latest scenario package you reference.

Hi Brad

I've uploaded a scenario and it doesn't look like the missiles are regularly flying through the terrain. You can see deltas in total alt as well as the AGL (Above Ground Level Value)as the underlying terrain changes.

The only other reason I can think the behavior might of occurred is the missile found a random gap in the underlying terrain values. A tell tale sign would be a lack of a AGL value. We'll need a save to correct this as we've got to find and fill in the missing spot(s).

Thanks!

Mike

I had to update to v1.05 to try the test scenario you provided, but now that I have ran it, I think the mistake was mine.

The missile actually does fly over the terrain, dropping to 60 ft AGL at times.

What I hadn't expected - and please correct me if I am wrong - is that the missile is actually climbing up (and dropping down) these steep fjord walls so easily. It seems to do so instantly.

(I hadn't expected radar detection of the target so easily either, in such conditions, but that may be another issue).

In effect, the missile seems to be hopping vertically over fjord walls like the real one depicted below and then dropping onto the target below (which would of course be in a radar shadow).

I have attached my own version of your test scenario which more closely depicts what I observed in the original scenario, where the fjord wall rises nearly vertically to about 659 ft on one side and down 446 ft on the other to meet the ocean surface.

If this is correct behaviour, is it even possible in the game, then, to hide among the fjords to avoid radar detection and/or missile attack?

Thanks Brad. Not a huge issue and definitely one we can address. Thanks for the time and the save!

Yes the sim handles terrain masking, earth curvature, etc, for sensors. Boats near land will also be more difficult to detect but you have to be quite close to the coastline for it to work. Please also note that some radars are OTH-SW capable which, granted the land elevation along the LOS is moderate, can detect ships over land.

It could very well be that you've found an edge case or a hole in the model. Like Mike said we'll look into it :)

Fixed in Build 650. There was a problem with the shore clutter calculations.
