Anyone interested in doing something for 3.2?

Post by Jeremy Pritchard »

Version 3.2 should be out a little before Christmas. It is also looking like it is the final version for PacWar, as there really does not seem to be many glaring problems left to fix (that we can fix), and the order of battle appears fairly complete as well. I will do subsequent 'fixes', should problems appear (i.e., incorrect placement of units, or annoying problems with the AI, etc...)

What I was wondering, is if there is anyone out there who is willing to create a 2002/2003 3.2 tutorial for PacWar? The only existing tutorial is based on the 1.22 version of PacWar, and is completely out of date, plus it misses some vital bits of information (much of which is found in the PacWar Hints).

I can supply any one of the version 3.2 scenarios (obc files) to the individual who is willing to do this (to have a reference of what is in the game), and it would be up to them to choose which scenario to use.

I can also provide PacWar hints for any information not covered in the official tutorial.

I think that starting with the official tutorial (that comes along with all Matrix PacWar versions) would be your best bet. All that really has to change is some wording (to match new base names, locations, units, etc...), as well as introducing features not previously discussed (i.e., HQ Command centres should be located close to the front, having HQ targets increases TF and LCU readiness/ability, etc...).

Including screenshots would also be a good idea.

I can do this myself, but am pretty busy right now, and would not be able to work on the tutorial until after Christmas. So, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks but I just got someone else willing to do this earlier this morning. However, if they are unable to complete the tutorial for any reason, or I might have a few people work on it (sort of like editors) so we can make sure that every base is covered. I will let you know (version 3.2 will probably be out sometime before Christmas, the Tutorial may come with it, but it may appear later, depends on how fast we get it done).

Thanks for your offer! I will keep you in mind!

No problem, just offering some help on what I think is a really great game. I also have some extra time right now so I probably would have been able to complete your requirements by Christmas. Feel free to let me know should you change your mind.

I started playing the original SSI PACWAR in 1993 following the purchase of War in Russia; and have had many years of enjoyment since that time. The improvements that you and others have incorporated into this game are truly outstanding. My thanks and appreciation to you and others for the countless hours of effort and work that has gone into this game in recent years keeping this game alive and enjoyable. Also, while I have been a silent observer to this Forum, it has bee great reading through the input and ideas from others who also really enjoy this game.

Thanks again to everyone for all the input and work keeping a War Game classic alive.

Newbies need to be involved too

I do not have extra time right now, so I cannot commit to helping out. That being said, I hope it is okay to suggest that some of the people who help with the tutorial be newbies. I think the tutorial will be a lot more helpful if it is tested on its target audience before the final release. I know from experience in other fields that the experts, while they know the content quite well, have often forgotten which questions come up as one learns for the first time, and prioritize the content differently as a result.

Not a very good Pacwar player, but I'll offer my editing services...
