Patching Strategy for UV

Post by Howard Mitchell »

Can you kind folks at Matrix please tell us what the patching strategy for UV is at the moment? Is there any point or date at which you will declare it a finished product? Is UV still seen as a proving ground for WitP?

Whilst we all appreciate the efforts being put in, there does seem to be a small flood of patches - 2.0, 2.10, 2.11 and another in the works.

Not complaining mind. My other favourite game is Combat Flight Simulator 2, for which Microsoft have produced precisely no patches for during its entire life!
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

I believe WitP and UV share a fair amount of something (code, data?) that means if they find and fix a bug in UV then it's quite likely they are 90% of the way to fixing the same bug in WitP.

So I'd say that as long as the community thinks this or that is broken (like the B-17 issue) and the devs agree then there will be a patch for it at some point :)

This is just my personal opinion though, so it may be quite wide off the mark.

I dont mind (well almost) being a guinea pig, because I know that there heart is in the right place and if they fix it here it will mean hopefully we wont see the same problem in WITP

Hi

The plan you ask, well we are using this to help make WITP better since it will be a monster game. Since the release of Uncommon Valor back in May we have released 8 patches in seven months fixing 70+ bugs (less then 5 were introduced from those patches) and adding 200+ new features or enchancements to the game. This is not even counting the updating to the Order of Battles.

Once the Level Bomber issue is address and we are happy with the results everyone will be moved over to WITP. We do plan to take some of the new features added in WITP to add them back to UV if it possible.

I do not feel anyone here is a guinea pig. We added as I said 200+ features and most of them directly requested by this forum. I think it would be better said that we truly allow the gamers/customer to have a real say in the development of the game then to call them guinea pigs.

So to answer your question directly I would say this will be the last patch for a while There is not a set deadline but it will be soon.

Ouch! Just looked at some of the comments in another thread. I'd just like to quote Dsandberg here:

"As far as I am concerned, once the fix for "bomber sweeps" becomes available, I'll be of the opinion that UV is as polished and finished of a product as I've ever seen. You should be proud of yourselves. "

I've worked for the last 18 years in software development, testing and support, looking after some very large systems with some very disparate user communities (all with strongly held and diametrically oppsed views of course) so I appreciate the great efforts you people put in. You should be proud of yourselves.

I can agree with this, even though I have two years less in the business than Howard. :D

I hope this is not in response to a few people who are constantly complaining and who gripe about the continuing support of Matrix and their patches. I have never understood the philosophy of people who dont like patches. If you dont like it dont download it. Just pretend the game is finished and go away. You dont have to download the patch!!! Most of us are grateful for the constant support and improvement of the game and continue to hope for future patches and the continued response to our suggestions. I have never been involved in or owned a computer game that had such great support from its company. Thanks Matrix and keep up the great work. I look forword to future patches that can only make this game better and better!!!
