Aircraft ranges & interceptions

Hi,

Appreciate help with the following:

1)I have air range preference ticked. What does the hexes that are highlighted represent when you click the air unit ? I am confused because I was able to select an air unit in the air attacking screen that was further away than the maximum hexes that were highlighted.

2)Why are my aircraft not intercepting ? I have interception set to 75% with the readiness at 100% . Is it because they are air units which contain bombers as well as fighters ?
I ask because my aircraft are suffering heavy losses when attacking Brussels, when I was expecting my air units to intercept the enemy fighters.

I believe the answer to #1 is hex's the air unit can move to.

But I don't think that is true, I have been able to move my unit much further than the greyed area shown when you select the unit.
