Failed paradrops/invadsions and required losses

Post by Courtenay »

Assume that a game is being played using the 2d10 combat table.

Suppose that a player make a paradrop (or an invasion) of a hex with a PAR, and also attacks with some ARM and MOT units from adjacent hexes. The combat is rolled on the blitz table, and the attack fails, with the attacker suffering a combat result of one unit killed, and not taking the hex.

The paradroping unit dies. Does this satisfy the loss for the combat, or does the attacker have to first kill a HQ-ARM, ARM, MECH or MOT, to satisfy the required loss rule, and only then kill the paradropping (or invading) unit?

I think that he does, but am not sure. (If there were two invading units, both would die, so it is possible to take more losses in a battle than called for by the CRT.)

To restate the question, must the attacking player take required losses before taking any losses from a failed invasion or paradrop, even if this requires him to make more losses than called for by the combat result? Assume that the units invading or paradropping are the wrong class to satisfy any required losses.

Yes required losses must be taken before any others and afterward, if invading units and/or paradropping units are left and are unable to advance, then they are additionally lost.

Upon reflection, that means that MWiF has a bug. We all know that MWiF does not actually impose required losses in combats, but have not worried about it too much because the players can normally execute the requirements themselves. Here, though, is a situation where the required loss rule imposes a different combat result. If an attacker suffers a "1" result on a blitz attack with a paradrop and a MOT and fails to take the hex, he should have to lose the paradropping unit and a MOT. However, MWiF will kill the paradropping unit, and use that to satisfy the losses. This is a rare situation, but one in which MWiF will produce an incorrect result.

Agreed. But that bug will be automatically fixed if the mandatory loss bug has been fixed. And that one will be fixed...
