Hi All.

Torpedo SET-65 is set as universal (capable against ships as well as submarines) in several db entries. This is almost cerainly wrong. First sovie heavy universal torpedo was USET-80 (preceded by lightweitght SET-72). Interestingly enough, several SET-65 entries correctly identify it as ASW only. Wrong entries are #1092, 1451, 2300 and 1391 (all DB3000) and 62, 991 and 262 (in CWDB). As these are all sub carried variants and no ship carried variant has any antisurface capability in db, it seems like design decision. However according to all available sources SET-65 had no antisurface capability regardless the carrier type. Its active acoustic seeker should be capable against submarines only.

BTW I have never really understood why there was such a problem in USSR to create "universal" seeker head. USET-80 has run into some serious trouble preciselz because their seeker combined two dimensional active-passive acoustic warhead with wakehoming, the latter presumably added to attack surface targets. There can be a problem with active acoustic reverberation near surface - perhaps that was the deal with dual purpose torpedoes (wonder how Western produced torpedoes overcome this). And there is a bonus for specialization - wakehomers dont have to be quiet and therefore the 53-61 and 53-65 family could have much better performance than SAET-60, the last purely antisurface electric driven torpedo. Anyway Soviet torpedoes until 1975 (introduction of SET-72) could attack either submarine or surface target but not both. There were essentially these HW families: a) passive electric ASuW (SAETs, effectivelly antiescort torpedos), b) passive electric ASW (SET-53, wire guided TEST-68; essentially equivalent of Mk37 family), c) active-passive electric ASW (SET-65 and its wireguided variant TEST-71; lightweight prototype SET-40), d) wakehoming (either turbine or steam) ASuW of 53-61 and 53-65 families. The wakehomers are upgraded WWII models, partly based on straight running German (53-56) and Japan (53-57) developments. They merged during sixties into one diverse family, nonetheless.
