Repairing ships & replacement AC

Post by Owl »

Well, perhaps I just missed it (probably did for that matter) but I could not find out how the ship repair routines work.

I assume ships have to be in port to repair, but when do you leave them in a local (on map port) Vs sending them to Japan or Pearl? If you drop a ship with 25 system damage into Rabaul or Truk and leave them alone, do they "fix" themselves eventually?

Second - curious - I've had my CV's in Rabaul for a few days now and have noticed no replacement AC. Again, answer may be in the manual - but do I need to just be patient (difficult, I have use for those carriers!) or send them to Truk.

3rd, just general question - other than potentially being in range of an attack at Rabaul, why send the carriers back to Truk at all?

Yes, I'm new - playing Japanese early so far only - have not tried American yet.

Replacement aircraft come in at a steady rate. Just check aircraft replacement under the intel menu. It will list the number in the replacement pool and the monthly replacement rate. (Some aircraft start off with no replacement rate. They will start to arrive later)

If you have replacement aircraft in the pool, and they are still not replacing, check the aircraft squadrons. It will usually only replace aircraft up to the number of pilots.

My understanding is carrier based squadrons "check" daily for available replacement aircraft, and LB every other day.

As for damaged ships in port, there was a thread on the main board referencing just that. Yes, they will repair, but it will take a while.

There have been a number of threads on what to do with damaged CVs, and what level to send them back to Japan/Pearl.
But for what it is worth, less than 30 it can get repaired locally at a point repaired every 2-5 days until it hits 20, then it repairs more quickly. Over 30 points it is much worse. It takes 5-7 days to repair 1 point if over 30. Over 40, don't even think about it.

Doh! I checked for answers all over this section but not the main forum

Bet I can find other stuff there too...

Now if I can get my ASW forces to do something other than fly around and waste fuel...

I think someone said the experience for planes on ASW missions has to be 70 for them to FIRE on the sub, but at least they could still SPOT them. Then you can have surface ships attack them. (but the SC's and PG's need to have experience of 50 -- best thing to do is just let them patrol till they do.)

Actually, a/c will fire on subs at lower experience, but I've found them to be only successful at higher levels (>70). Part of that is flying ASW a/c at low altitudes, too. If exp>70, lower patrol altitude to 100 ft (yep, 100). Increases odds dramatically (well, relatively speaking...).

I never send out PC TFs to engage subs anymore. PCs work better in escort, seems to me. And, while they won't react to subs until exp>50, it should be higher than that to be successful. Send them with your CS convoys and they'll gain experience relatively quickly.

Ah, there's nothing like sinking a sub...

Another thing that could be hampering your ASW efforts is that they slashed Japanese ASW by 50% somethime around the 2.0 patch. It's very hard to sink a sub these days.
