I'm $94 Poorer

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

I'm $94 Poorer

Downloading as I type. Don't know how I'll fit this in as h2h CM is my drug of choice these days, but I'll find a way to play the AI and eventually another human.

Never regretted a GG purchase. Played a full Campaign of War in the Pacific and as well as AE as well as numerous games of the smaller scenarios.

Bought War in the East and hardly touched it, yet to this day I still don't regret the purchase.

I played the old WitW on a 386 and as well as the original Pac War. I can't think of 1 GG game that sucks. There may be 1, but I can't think of it or I never owned it.

If you can afford both I would get WitP and WitW. Its been ages since I played WitP. Played a Grand Campaign against BLurking when it first came out and wasted a good part of my life in the process. I'm sure its changed since, but its a classic. Really 2 different games and I would be hard pressed to say which one is better.

So far I like War in the West and in between my Combat Mission h2h games this will do just fine. It should run fine on my laptop and probably will run fine on a tablet too. War in the West will definitely compete with CM for playing time. Since its probably going to be playable on a tablet, while CM is too intensive for that, WitP is what I'll be playing while on the move.

I have War in the East and I haven't really taken the time to play it. The East Front is a completely different beast and liked playing IL2 in the past and love Red Thunder both against the AI and h2h, but the grand strategy aspect of the Eastern Front it is something I'm somewhat ambivalent about.

The Western Front on a grand scale interests me more.

The beauty of War in the Pacific is that it adds something which I can only call an rpg mechanic. The game is modeled down to individual pilots and ships and in the campaigns you often follow the tour of duty of your favourite squadron or your preferred battle wagon, giving the game a sense of drama as if you followed the hero of a war movie. Also the little animated ships and the plane icons make things come alive a lot more, compared to the more sober counters of War in the East/West. The personal drama of losing your best carrier to a lucky submarine torpedo, is hard to beat though...in the Pacific I always felt a lot more attached to my units than in Russia.

War in the East/West is a lot more about fighting though, while War in the Pacific is usually a series of short and frantic battles followed by longer lulls until you get your logistics ready for the next operation. Also War in the East makes you feel more like a supreme commander who gives general orders and leaves the details to his staff, which is nice since sometimes it can become a bit annoying having to micro everything in War in the Pacific.

I would say for a more strategic approach and if you like to have constant battles I would go with War in the West, if you love to micro-manage everything and want a strategy game which also looks a bit nicer (for example animated battle screens, animated icons for every ship, invasion screens and naval gun fire) then go with Pacific.

Both are great games, but they offer a very different experience.

Not poorer. It's a nice meal out with drinks and a movie - except this will last forever. You know where the meal ends up...[:D]

Oh I just finished my annual mil training... the earned money was spent for WitW - a good deal in my opinion. :D

It all depends how many hours you will spend playing or tinkering with the game. In this light WitE was my cheapest entertainment purchase ever (measured in cost per hour of play) with a cost of about $0.15/h (or even less). A movie costs $5/h :) The same will apply to WitW.

Dont take this advice. If youre getting WITP makes sure you get WITPAE.
