Ground combat units in ocean hexes

Post by Grotius »

Hmm, I think I've got a problem. I was trying to attack from the ferry hexes against the unit in Reggio. I had a couple ground combat units on each ferry hex, in each case stacked with an Amphibious HQ. (Not sure if that's the only way to conduct such an attack; did I need the Amphib HQs?) I was short on combat engineers, so my first effort failed spectacularly, and all four units routed. (Attacking units can rout?) The trouble is, they routed into the ocean. o.o

If you need a saved game, I can supply one.

I hoped the problem would cure itself after the Axis logistics phase, but no luck. It's actually not the end of the world if I have to go back a turn or two; I was starting to think I should have just planned a new amphibious assault, or at least a paradrop, instead of a direct head-on attack on Reggio. (How *do* people get across the Straits of Messina?)

Most of the routed units have recovered their morale, but they're still treading water. :)

Can you please attach zipped file prior the attack?

Sure; here it is.

I was able to reproduce the problem by conducting a deliberate attack with all four ground units on the two ferry hexes. I held down shift and highlighted both stacks -- including the Amphibious HQs. (Maybe that's the problem?) Once again, all four ground units landed in the ocean, routed.

Incidentally, this was the worst-organized attack in the history of wargaming. Four units, four different HQs; no combat engineers attached to the infantry (though the HQs had some); an armored unit involved when it should be all infantry. I was getting tired and frustrated trying to cross the Strait, and I just threw some units into the attack in desperation. Sort of embarrassing.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

The bug is that after attack it does amphib retreat and leaves them unloaded. I think it will get fixed in coming path.

Btw, in some of my attacks when debugging I was able to dislodge units in Reggio. So attack wasn't doomed but very risky.

Thanks for looking into it. I actually did dislodge the unit in Reggio after that attack, but the bug gives me an excuse to go back a couple turns and try something different. Thanks again.

If you can't reach your paratroopers in a turn (two at the most), you will probably lose them if you tried a para drop behind Reggio. And you might want to consider using US troops to attack Reggio, because your going to take horrendous losses getting it that way (direct attack), and you lose a VP for every 600 brits killed, but it takes a 1000 US troops to lose a VP. Check some of the AAR's out, and you can see how to bypass Reggio, isolate it, and then take it. A head on attack would be my last choice to take it.
