Question on casualty screen

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Question on casualty screen

Post by ultradave »

After "mastering" Husky, I've started up a Breakout and Pursuit scenario. When I look at the casualty screen I see casualties for the turn and total casualties. The total casualties list about 126,000 men disabled for the Allies and a roughly similar number for Germany. Is this a number from some beginning point like the Normandy invasion, or Sicily or some other date?

Reading the manual it says that it's the total from the beginning of the game, but after one turn it seems impossible that there would be that many disabled men. I'm assuming then it's giving a total for the war in the west or some such number?

This is what the scenario designers put into the disabled pool at the start of the scenario. Some of this manpower returns each turn. They have been factored into the play balance and victory conditions. This is supposed to represent previous casualties that will be able to return to duty at some point.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that but couldn't find a description in the manual. Thanks for the quick reply.
