saving games

I'm missing something I guess,how do you save a game?
I hit the show save screen see the file I was playing and close.
When I return to play and hit load save game and try to open it say's"can't open file"
Why can't there be a simple save game button?
I read the manual but it doesn't say how to save just how to load a saved game.

I know I can set auto save but don't want to save every turn but if I have to I will
never mind figured it out.
