NF AS missions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

NF AS missions

Post by Mac Linehan »

Gents -

From my understanding of the rule book:

5.3.2. Air Doctrine Screens (pg39/40):

Mission Aircraft Percentage (Mis Pct): (Affects) All (missions).
Determines the number of aircraft that the computer
will attempt to have participate in mission as a
percentage of what the computer would normally
attempt to send. For example, a setting of 50 results
in the computer selecting air group units in an
attempt to equal half the number of aircraft it would
select in a notional mission.

Note that for automatic
air intercepts, the Air Superiority Mission Aircraft
Percentage doctrine setting also controls the size of
the automatic air intercepts that occur during the
air execution phase as well as the enemy ground
movement phase (17.3.6).

End Quote.

As there is no night intercept Directive, night interceptions are also auto generated by the computer.

I am not clear as to how I enable night fighter interceptions. Do I simply set my various night fighter Squadrons to "Nights Only" in the Commander's Report, and leave it to the computer; or is there another setting or step I need to take to make a NF Squadron available for operations,

Have (re)read the rules again (which never hurts); but am uncertain - which is why I ask the Smart Guys <grin>.

Thank You all.

Edit:

I have found the answer:

17.1.6. Day and Night Missions (pg153)- enabling "night" in the Air Group Detail Window.

This is embarrassing as I did have the above reference listed in my notes (sigh).

Yes, night interceptions are handled automatically by units set to night missions. In reality only night fighters with radar are likely to intercept anything so those are the only fighters most players set to night missions. The vast majority of night interceptions are by Axis interceptions of RAF Bomber Command night bombing raids. There is not a lot of other night intercepting going on around the map.

Chris-

Thank You for your immediate response.

I set everybody (Allies, July 1943 Scenario, first turn) to "rest" with a few fighter Squadrons based at Valetta (Med Command) set to Air Superiority. I have also set one NF Squadron at Valetta to "night only"; hopefully that will do the trick.

This is a learning experience; if the Luftwaffe hammers me, I will have to reload and rethink. Do not yet have a feel for what the Luftwaffe / AI will do early on.

The intent is to rest all air and bring up morale, while reducing fatigue; concurrent with systematic strategic recon to ID what to hammer in Germany.

Plan to take the fight via airpower to the Reich while learning and configuring the supply system (which is just as critical). Will also choose the Med invasion points and plan accordingly - try and do it right.

At least, that's the plan...
