Luftflotte Reich

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Luftflotte Reich

Post by mariandavid »

Am only a short way into the 43 campaign so apologies if this is resolved the next turn I play but: There does not seem to be a Summary Line in the Air AI creation that shows Luftflotte Reich. It shows the command in Paris - but there seems to be no way to get the fighters in Germany to set up a fighter supremacy command centered on the Ruhr.

Luftflotte Reich is not coded to set ADs through the Auto AD Creation system.

If I assign fighters to LF reich and do not do any manual AD`s will the fighters intercept Allied bombers on their own.?

Also is removing the drop tanks and adding extra gun pack a good strategy for some aircraft eg FW 190`s ?

Thanks.

Yes they will still intercept.

Manoeuvrability and firepower are key factors.

Agree with John especially about firepower. Bolt on extra 20mm and 30mm guns on interceptors that are targeting bombers.

Thanks for replies.

Chris. How do I get the airgroups to target allied fighters or bombers. (as in Bombing the reich) ? Obviously best to arm the anti-bomber gruppen with extra guns, but what about fighters?

Or is it Bf 109 - fighters
Fw 190 - bombers. ( and others ) ????

Thanks

Augustas, you don't have to do anything to get them to target allied bombers and their escorts. Place your air groups on air bases on the routes the bombers use and the computer will do the rest. Do not use the air superiority directive for intercepting, it is much less effective. As the Germans, you are probably best on most turns not assigning any air missions and letting your planes intercept whatever flies near them.

I don't think the FW's have any extra guns but they already have good cannons. Personally I don't think their optional air to air rockets are any good, but maybe others who've used them more disagree. Definitely add the 2x 20mm guns on 109's. Add guns to all night fighters and twin engine planes you can. I laughed when I saw Germans using bombers as night fighters but for attacking slow moving British bombers at night they are great as they can pack a lot of cannons.

I generally don't use drop tanks on German fighters. Pavel can clarify if I'm wrong but you don't want them flying a long way to intercept (more fatigue, probably less chance to intercept if farther away). The fighters seem to have plenty of targets without the extra range. Also, extra range could bring them out to the channel on an intercept where they will be swarmed on by Allied fighters. Goal is to shoot down bombers. Germans can't take on Allies fighter to fighter as their numbers swamp you.

I do Reich defense in three belts. Loads of flak on the coast. Then FW's and 109's behind that. Deeper still I put the twin engine fighters as they don't do as well against escorts and you want to catch the daylight bombers with few or no escorts with these guys. If you aren't regularly getting over a hundred fighters intercepting a raid you are spacing them out too far apart. Forget trying to contest anything on the coast, especially France/Belgium. Holland is ok.

Above all, conserve your pilots.

Yes, to the lower side by disbanding air groups. ;)

the designers choose to limit the internal ability, IE no hindsight for some things... perhaps this could be a wish list for a mod, currently I do not know if this is mod able
