1.61 crash on startup?

I installed this game today from a fresh 1.5 download from Matrix, updated with a fresh 1.61 download, and the game crashes on startup. I get a black screen with the cursor, a couple seconds of music, and then a CTD.

I've tried various possible solutions from this forum, including running the .exe in compatibility mode and disabling the intro music, but I get the same results.

Any suggestions?
