OOB re-organization

Post by governato »

I often find myself reorganizing the OOB of my forces at the start of a scenario. My goal is to add direct support to my units (say adding an infantry and mortar unit to a tank company, or vice versa, a tank platoon to a mech infantry company) as a result my companies tend to look like old fashioned kampfgruppen and the original OOB is drastically changed. The advantage is that keeping units within HQ range is a lot easier.

My question is: is this an approach that 'd be realistic for Western forces or would they rather prefer keep the original OOB? Are there any penalties in C&C? What if OOB changes are doen *during* a scenario and not in the pre-order phase? Would Warsaw pact forces even consider such an approach?

tx in advance!

Reorg is on par for NATO formations, as brigade or battalion commander you would have the freedom to (at least within the British) adjust your forces as required for their task. The soviets, not that much I think other than a 'tactical battalion' - a composite force much like a Kg but I'm not sure when they started using that force structure.

I don't think there are any penalties for doing such changes unless your forces end up outside command range either before or during a scenario. I do find myself shuffling the OOB if I lose a low level HQ to ensure the lower units are within command range.
