Newbie Seeking Opponent!

Hi! I just won my first game the other day and I am in love with this game. Any other relative newbies that would like to try a pbem?

Hi Lerugray,

I just purchased the expansion. I have played PBEM games before (I played a game of Blue & Grey against Vigabrand and got badly mauled). I'd guess I'm an intermediate player. If you're comfortable with that, and a casual pace of a few turn a week (or less, depending on work conditions). I'd be interested in talking further.

If you're just into this engine a good question would be 'have you successfully created corps and armies yet?' That says a lot about where you are regarding understanding the engine.

I live in USA Central Time.

I'm looking to buy a WWI game and am on the fence to buy this game, and I'm considering this game or Commander.

When I read: "have you successfully created corps and armies yet?...that says a lot about where you are regarding understanding the engine"...makes me consider Commander over this game. Plus, its more active at the Commander forum.

Why should I consider this game over Commander?
Conflict with the unexpected: two qualities are indispensable; first, an intellect which, even in the midst of this obscurity, is not without some traces of inner light which lead to the truth; second, the courage to follow this faint light. KvC

Hi Jagdtiger14,

I haven't played Commander. So, I'm reluctant to give you advice that compares the two games.

AGEOD games tend to have an engine that has to be learned. Many players, and I count myself as one, do not learn of the mechanics for some time. Here are three learned mechanics that tend to demonstrate, in the game American Civil War 2, how well you've mastered the game system: 1) Can you form higher level units such as corps and armies? 2) Do you know how to use tooltips? 3) Can you develop your conscripts to regular units through training?

Lerugray, who started this thread, has defeated Athena too. That's a good sign of having an intermediate level of awareness of the game. I put myself in that category.

I don't mind playing with folks who may not understand these mechanics. But I'll go in knowing I'm going to need to explain concepts. They go in knowing that I've studied the game more. We can each learn from each other if we both have that transparency.

I've found the newest edition to EAW makes the game much more approachable. The mini-games, such as Sinai, Rumania, Serbia and so on, that were added to the Breaking the Deadlock addition are able to be completed within a night or a weekend. That gives you more chances to learn. And now I feel more confident playing the campaign game someday.

The campaign games here can easily last a month. (But I played War in the East, War in the West, War in Europe, War in the Pacific... I was a monster gamer at one time in the long ago time when we thought Pong was exciting.)

There is a very active AGEOD game community and there is a very good Wiki. But it is located on the AGEOD site. I know there is corporate relationship between AGEOD and MATRIX. Beyond that, I know nothing about the nature of that relationship. But rest assured there is a detailed forum and Wiki.

Here's that link: ageod-forum (dot) com [I don't have permission to add hypertext links due to my being new to the forum.]

My bottom line is that I am careful with my game spending. I have a family and a life outside gaming. I want good value for the money. I have felt that AGEOD has provided that with their games. I've felt strongly enough about it that I've recently joined their beta test for new games.

This is my take, buy both.
Commander uses the same dynamic strategic level of play as in Commander:Europe at War, my very favorite game of all time. It is clean, simple and fun to play.
End All Wars is much more complex. It brings you into the Great War at a level of detail you cannot help but enjoy. The revolts in the Mid-East, the Japanese and African aspects of the war. Totally a time to learn and play the whole darned thing.
