The 20 Best Wargames of All Time

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

We just wish they could have used a more recent image of the game. That screenshot is 2.0. Old maps and flat counters. We have come a long way from that original release. Still stoked about being in that top 20 though!

Well deserved being in the top 20.

List is missing some old greats though - M1 tank platoon and Harpoon

It's an interesting list. I think he should have had some categories like sims, FPS, RTS, and classic wargames. Then you capture those "war" based games and sims, but also keep classic wargames out of the same sentence as Call of Duty. That line has blurred over the past few years.

Well done for making the list. I rate this game and Command Ops as the top 2 in the list.

Cograts team, and well deserved, in my opinion! The support OTS provides is unparalleled in my experience.

Here's to many more games using this excellent engine.

Gents: [8D]

In addition to PC Gamer missing the following items in their review (as mentioned by other posters):

1) Use a more recent game edition for the image.
2) Setup categories

I would have liked to read product specs for each game highlighted.

For example, it could follow how Matrix Games depicts its titles:

Flashpoint Campaigns - Red Storm Rising

Era - Modern
Theater - Easter Europe, Western Europe
Unit scale - Platoon, Company, Battalion, Regiment
Players - 1-2
AI - Yes
PBeM - Yes

And mention what makes the game innovative, such as the asynchronous turn structure that models the OODA loop.

But, it's ALWAYS good to be included in a "Best wargame list." [;)]

mwest, I agree, a more recent picture for us and a bit more info on the games would have made things better.

Congratulations to team Red Storm!

FPC:RS has been a great source of ideas for creating maps and scenarios in Steel Beasts, another title that made the top 20!

Flight sims definitely should have been in their own catagory. Considering how few slots were left for actual wargames, it's even more of an accomplishment for FC:RS to make the list. Congrats to everyone behind this marvelous computer wargame.
