UV 2.0 Please help get started...

Post by Attack Condor »

HI I bought UV2.0 on 12/26 but cannot get it to run. The autoplay does not work and (according to the Players Guide) I installed it via the setup.exe from the CD. After installing, the only way to get to the start screen is via the CD. When I choose PLAY UV, the system freezes (I cannot even eject the CD) and attempting to close the program via the CTRL-ALT-DEL End Program option results in a restart. I cannot give you any kind of an error code I've seen in other threads here.

I have a Celeron 733Mhz with Windows ME, 320MB of RAM. Other CD's play correctly in the system.

I don't know if there is anything you can recommend, but I do want to play this game and will be happy for any help you can suggest.

Thank you.
*** update *** apparently I have an itchy trigger finger...didn't wait long enough for autoplay to complete...but now cannot load DirectX8.1 I am trying to include the error log for review...game intro seems to run (i hear the opening music), but screen is blacked out.

but now cannot load DirectX8.1

What exactly do you mean? That you can´t install DirectX 8.1 or that UV gives you an error message ?

When I try to load Directx8.1 I get a window stating "this may take a few minutes" and then nothing happens after that...no blue "status bar" indicating progress of the load (I have waited for up to 10 minutes). I have to CtrlAltDel to end task (status of load is "not responding" and the errors I posted are from Norton Crash Guard log.
This is very frustrating (tantalizing?) because the game actually did run once before locking up (no control of mouse, keyboard, CD eject...everything froze) repeatedly at the "Play UV" option of the start menu. I uninstalled and reinstalled...even reloaded the OS...and reinstalled
I hope that clarifies my earlier post and thank you for responding

Okay,

UV needs DirectX 8.1 to be installed. When you try to install DirectX please disable all your applications running in the background. This is recommend for every installation progress you do on your PC. Programms running and programms running in the background can interfere with installers. Especially guarding systems like the Norton Crash Guard, Virus Scanners, Task Managers and Firewalls running directly on your PC.

Let me hear if that helped.

I started the computer. I then used CtrlAltDel to close everything except Explorer (when I tried to close that I was asked if I wanted to shut down...I assume that has to stay running).I then tried to reinstall DirectX8.1 from the UV disk. Unfortunately, the results are the same...the program extracts files, but stops when the window showing the progress ("this may take a few minutes..") is shown.

OK

Go to the Microsoft Direct X web site and download the latest version of Direct X (v9.0) version 9.0 works fine with UV.

will do...(also give the 56k modem an extra bag of oats...I think it's gonna need it..*s*...) after I D/L 9.0... do I have to save it to the UV directory, or will UV search for it on it's own?

***added 9:12pm 12/28*** found Windows Me update for DirectX8.1 installed and DirectX8.1 has loaded (blue progress line filled and then stopped)
Read a post by Russ Moorhouse that DirectX9.0 was for XP users only - is this correct?

trying to run UV now with DX8.1

unfortunately, the autoplay is still not functioning...and starting the game via the shortcut icon on the desktop takes me to the menu, but when the Play UV option is chosen, the "hand" pointer changes to an "arrow" pointer and nothing happens. CtrlAltDel reveals the Explorer, the UV startup menu and something called simply uncommonvalor (the program?) whish is tagged as "not responding" Nothing else is running but the three I just listed (all other running programs shutdown as you indicated earlier).

This is becoming frustrating...finally a game that has everything I want and I can't get it going..........:(

What video card and driver set are you using? Have you tried doing the DX Diagnostics? Sounds like a video driver problem to me.

what i am using is what came with the computer...Im not sure what kind it is...but here is what I was able to print off of a display summary: PnP Monitor; VIDEO CHIPSET = Intel (R) 82810 Graphics Controller Ver. 4.0; Resolution 1024x768 in True Color; Driver version = 4.0; Technology = Raster display

As for DX diagnostics....I don't know where to begin - is there a program with them on it?

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply it's nice to knwo people still try to help out :)

Okay,

first of. DirectX is a standalone programm that is required for nearly every game out there. No for Uv alone, so when you download it you have to install it, not saving it to the UV directory or so. Just save it to your prefered directoryfor downloads and install it.

I corrected Ross´s post about DirectX 9.0 beeing only for XP ;), just read further in the thread it´s the next reply.

If DirectX refuses to install correctly (you will be prompted to rebbot your computer after the installation has finished!) then I´m pretty sure it´s something with your system.

Please attach your DXDiag txt file to this thread. You can find the DX Diagnostics tool by clicking on START/search and then search for the "dxdiag.exe". If you have a default set up system you´ö propably find the tool in C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Run the tool, perform all test and save the information to a text file (there´s a button for that). Please attach the text file to this thread.

I found the dxdiag.exe file and ran it. While it was loading, a message "Dxdiag has detected there may have been a problem accessing system information the last time the program was used" and then asks if I would like to bypass the system information at this time. Choosing No locks the program up and it gives the familar "program not responding after CtrlAltDel (CAD). Choosing Yes allowed the program to load and the results of the test are as follows:

(also, ty for the update on 9.0 - guess I should read the whole thread before commenting :) - I'm loading it now, and will rerun the dxdiag after it's done (about 2 hours from now :|)

According to:

http://support.intel.com/support/graphi ... prd798.htm

your Intel(R) 82810 Graphics Controller drivers are way out of date. Your current driver version is 4.12, the latest available (with full DirectX 8.1 support) is 6.7. I strongly recommend to update those drivers.

You can download the latest drivers here:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts ... _Intel.asp

Hover on "Graphics" in the navigation, then select "Intel® 82810 Graphics Controller".

Be aware that you use an "on board" graphic chip that uses "shared memory" (in your case up to 32mb at maximum). Such onboard grpahic chips can give you trouble with games.

Please also follow this steps:

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/identify.htm

and identify your motherboard for me, so I can check if your BIOS is up to date and identify the correct sound chipset, it´s driver maybe out of date too.

I updated the graphics controller as you specified...it went smoothly...I have also D/L Dx9.0 and reran the dxdiag and attached the results below. I could not locate the type of motherboard but did look inside my comp and found this stamped on the motherboard: Mat No 115661 COGNAC 20000731

(I hope that provides some info)

Still have the fingers crossed :)

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Mogami....:D

For the Matrix staff...something new...when the game was running, the CD brought up the autoplay menu..(almost as if when the CD is accessed, the menu is run) Is this a problem? I can ignore it by just clicking on the UV application in the taskbar, but I wanted to let you know this

Once again thanks to everyone who took the time to help...esp. Mark.....it may be your job to do this (or it may not be ;) ), but it's nice to know help is available for those of us who know enough about computers just to be dangerous
