4.2 exe with correct Finnish names

Post by Kharan »

I corrected the Finnish names in the mech.exe of version 4.2. I replaced the weirdo names with proper names of same size, so any offsets didn't move. You can download it here.

This should be easy to put into v4.3 (if there is one) by you Matrix guys... just copy/paste it into the new exe, the start point (Perttula) is 0x2129f9H and the end point (Vihavainen) 0x212cf3H.

Does the secure PBEM check that the exe file is intact?

I'm pretty sure PBEM doesn't check if both players have the same names, unless it compares *every* byte of the players' exes, which would take a few megs every turn Image...

The only thing I changed is the Finnish names (their letters, not their sizes, so that everything after the names wouldn't be moved downwards), everything else is intact, all the offsets the same.

Does a chscksum so if you use two different files it will bomb out so make sure your opponant uses the same exact .exe and OOb files or you will have problems.

PBEM (secure and unsecure) seems to work between the default mech.exe and the mech.exe with the real Finnish names.

Here's the complete list btw...

Perttula Ahlqvist Alalahti Annala Viitala Auer Cajander Kuistio Erkko Fagerholm Koskela Eronen Hietanen Hakala Hakkila Hannunen Asikainen Holsti Salonen Jaakkola Jalas Jarvi Jutikkala Kaila Kallio Kangas Kekkonen Kivimaki Koskimaki Kuistio Kuusinen Laakso Lahti Laitinen Linkomies Mattinen Merikanto Musta Niemi Nisonen Niukkanen Nurmi Ojala Oksanen Paasikivi Hakkarainen Pakaslahti Pekkala Haataja Ranta Ruokomaki Saari Saarinen Rontu Siilasvuo Svinhufvud Talvela Tanner Tapola Tuominen Valkoinen Heimola Laaksonen Waltari Jama Vanhala Wuorinen Laurila Laitinen Kariluoto Kapanen Kallio Salminen Jakala Laitinen Melaluoto Tuomainen Alanen Vuorila Sarastie Varha Nirvi Asikainen Linna Majala Lehtola Kekkonen Korhonen Koskimaki Salonen Saarikanto Rokka Vihavainen

Now I can't make it any easier than this! Image

By the way, all the names are in mech.exe as ASCII, with 00H (NUL) separating them. They can be edited in any hex editor.

Jama? Varha? Nirvi? Image

So secure PBEM does not work and does work... I wonder.

What if someone installs a localized version of mech.exe, wouldn't the checksum fail in that case, too?

Every Finn here should know Varha and Nirvi, and the third's someone who I play with Image. Anyway, they're all Finnish.

So secure PBEM does not work and does work... I wonder.
Well cease your wondering and try it out yourself Image.

Perhaps it does not work if you change the exe after you have started the secure PBEM? Did you try this?

I just started a secure PBEM game with the old mech.exe, played a few turns, then changed to the mech.exe with the modified leader names, played another few turns and ended the game by surrendering. Didn't see any problems.

Cool, then Paul's information must be wrong. Still... nothing is more frustrating than finding out that the PBEM does not work, so I'm still wondering. Thanks! Image

Good initiative, Kharan. Now we finally have some REAL names Image. Should warrant a humorous comment in the next Pelit-magazine, I hope Image.

Yells "Tulta! Perkele! Tulta! Perkele!" while shooting with the Suomi SMG. I like the few selected weapon sounds with additional shouts Image. The Russian sounds aren't bad either (have I heard these by any chance in Close Combat or Rogue Spear before?).

Yes, you are right, you heard the yells in Rogue... I made them to be more realistic by adding some shouting in the backround ;-)

By the way that "Tulta!"-guy is me, but the "Perkele!" is not me, but made by me... some Finn inside humour ;-)

Ilja

PS. It's nice to have my own last name in the game but when playing as Russian it's damn hard to kill my only grand-grandfather ;-) hehe

I was wrong... sometimes it lets you play a few turns with different exes, but then it displays an error message loading the game. So don't use the exe with the corrected names when playing secure PBEM, unless your opponent has it too.

Unsecure PBEM and online play do work between the original and corrected exes, naturally. Let's still hope Matrix includes those names in 4.3, so that the Finnish PBEM-players don't have to suffer from the camp-humor Image.

Kharan, can you send me another 10 names? I was putting them in off of your list and ran short. The length of them doesn't matter as long as it is 15 letters or less.

Thanks,
Tom

You guys amaze me, especially those who belong to the Finnish lobby. Why is there not a Norwegian lobby or a Belgian lobby or a Greek lobby? I'm NOT poking fun at you guys, but are there really that many Finns who are getting into this game? If so, I think it's wonderful, BUT, wouldn't it follow that you would encourage development of Arctic scenarios involving the Finns and their German allies?
