Road to Moscow game (never released)

Post by tex_ka95 »

Does anyone remember a game that was in development in the late 90's called Road to Moscow? it was being developed by the Battlefield Design Group which then was bought by Interactive Magic and the game was finally cancelled in 2000 before IM went under.

I remember anticipating this game more than just about any other and was crushed when it was cancelled. No surprise just about the only game I've played the last 2 years has been War in the East.

I would be great if Matrix could track down any code that may still exist and finish this game. :)

Here are some links to info about the game including a screenshot.

You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Thanks Matti. I've never been a fan of the "Panzer Corps" type of wargames, and this game certainly has nothing to do with the Road to Moscow game I mentioned.

WitE already covers that scenario. But after looking at the screenshots, the counters are company level (ergo, more detail)? [X(] It's regiment level for the Axis (or division) maximum in WitE. Anyway, this is an operational game, right?

Awesome map, by the way. The WitE vanilla map has been improved by users but this one is gorgeous [:)]

It really was a gorgeous looking game, especially for it's time. it was an operational game but I don't think it was turn based. I think it was to some extent "real time".

Yes, WitE covers that scenario beautifully, but I think Road to Moscow was pretty unique even against today's games, although I don't recall all the details. And Matrix certainly doesn't shy away from releasing game after game that covers the same time period, same battle and many look the same.

It was 1999 so I would say you are totally correct [:)]

Hmmm, so not really IGOUGO (WitE) but WEGO then? A mix between WitE and COTA (Conquest of the Aegean) then. A lot of units involved though. Perhaps the design was too ambitious. I mean for 1999 (I speak from utter ignorance though).

I think you are right about the game being to ambitious for it's time. It was in development for years, got passed around to various publishing houses and eventually canceled. Imagine WitE on a 233Mhz single core proc and 16mb of RAM. lol

We looked into that years ago - unfortunately, I believe it's never going to be completed.

It was extremely ambitious for its time and therefore created huge anticipation.

IMHO there are better games available now than what RTM was going to be, though it sure would have been great had it been completed back then.

What brought this all on is that just yesterday I found my old website that I ran back in the mid-late 90s on Wargames. It was mostly a repository for Steel Panthers scenarios. I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the Road to Moscow game but it was listed on my site with me gushing about how I couldn't wait for it to come out.

Check out my site on the Wayback Machine. I can't believe it's there any fully functional. i think I had it up until early 2001.

Yeah, I remember the buzz about RtM, and I felt that it was way too ambitious considering the technology of the time. This is what led me to Schwerpunkt's "Russo-German War", which is a fine game in its own right. That's the closest to a "monster game" that I ever bought, other than a couple of board games I have.

Actually, I believe that something like RtM would have suited the DoD to develop, rather than a commercial game.

There was a title in the 80's too called "Combat Leader" by a david hille if I remember correctly. Issued by SSI back in the very early years of computer gaming. In fact it too was the very first rts game I remember seeing also. Not too fast though like today's rts games. Tanks were small rectangles with a long thin line coming out of their front to look like the cannon I guess and each infantry represented piece looked like a very small chess pawn. Motorized vehicles like trucks and armored cars were just rectangles. I remember is was an Apple II's green screen look. Basically just two maybe 3 colors. Black, awful looking green and maybe a blue for rivers.

Raising the dead here. I still think of RtM from time to time. Or rather what it could have been, and I feel that hasn't really been done yet. Maybe Command Ops comes closest but ton a whole different scale. I do like the idea of managing the broad strokes and having you subordinates set up much of the rest. And with todays tech you could fill most of any "decision void" adding in political aspects much in the same way as Decisive Campaigns. I feel that both tactical and strategic games today tend to become a bit too fiddly and details focused for my tastes (I'm getting old!). Road to Moscow at least looked like it could fill a void even today. I think my "perfect" war game would be a real-time game where you could essentially start as a company commander and work you way up from there. Being a small cog in a massive machinery controlled by the AI. And if you start or work your wayup all the way to the top, AI is there support your ideas and execute your plans, leaving you to focus on the battle plan.
