Some Firing Questions

Post by Michael T »

What going on here? I thought units could only fire thru the forward hexes. But this counter attack by the 1st Virginia is coming from a rear hex? Is the forward firing limit only applied to the attacking units?

Also I thought units could only fire twice, but it appears units counter attacking have no limit?

Are there any limits on number of times counter attacking can fire?

I did not find any info on this in the manual, maybe I missed it.

I can only answer part of this (firing backwards at a penalty is possible), so I'll yield to Eric (who is busily working on the next patch).
Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I torment eager potential customers by not sharing screenshots of "Brother Against Brother." Everyone has a talent.

Ok, thats fine. But I would like to know the modifier. And is it only defenders that can do this?

I am most concerned about the apparent unlimited number if times the defender can fire back at attackers.

I also charged a unit from the rear and I lost 111 men to 9 defenders! I had 600+, defender 450. Do units charged at from the rear/flank suffer penalties?

The modifier for firing at less than ideal angles should be listed in each combat report if you scroll down. IIRC firing to the rear is a pretty significant modifier. How often a unit can counterattack depends also on the quality of its command chain, sometimes a good commander will give a unit a bonus counterattack that it would not otherwise have had.

The thing about charges is they are more random than fire combat, so modifiers do apply but they are more of a gamble nonetheless.

I think I figured what was happening, not having any idea about the AI levels, I was using the hardest Setting (General I think). Since going back to Lt Colonel things have become more palatable :)
