Invasion Question

Post by Toko33 »

I am new to WIF. I am running through the Guadalcanal scenario. It is the first turn for Japan, weather is Fine. I selected COMBINED for move type.
I placed a Naval stack with a TRN and MARINE unit in RABUL to start game. I loaded the MAR unit, and moved them all into the Coral Sea Sea Zone surrounding New Caledonia (FR).
On the Invasion part of the turn, I select the MARINE unit and mouse over potential hexes to Invade.

For some reason that I cannot find in the rules, when I mouse over any hex on the New Caledonia island,
I see DSPT (disrupted) symbol over any possible hex on the New Caledonia island.

I can mouse over any hex of northeast Australia that is connected to the sea zone and there is no DSPT warning.
Likewise, other Allied owned island hexes, I can invade without seeing DSPT.
It's only New Caledonia.

Why does an Invasion onto New Caledonia only, and not any other hexes, cause the DSPT symbol to appear? I cannot find any reason that this should happen in the rules.

Two possibilities, or maybe both combined:

1. Weather is not fine and thus terrain costs are higher. Note weather zones can sub-divide groups of land hexes that are all accessible from the same sea zone. You can turn on/off the display of the weather in each hex with a button in the Main Form.

2. If you enter a hex that costs more movement than the unit has then it gets disrupted. This applies to advance after combat (i.e. an invasion) as well as to land movement.

Welcome to the forum, Toko33.

Is it the same result if you mouse over the port Noumea?

Thanks for the quick responses.

I confirmed I get "DSRP" when I mouse over Noumea, and all other 6 hexes on the island.

I also get the DSRP when I mouse over:
- Chesterfield Islands (Nca)
- Huon Islands (Nca)
- Ouvea
- Lifou

The following areas I do *not* get any DSRP:
- Coral Sea Islands (Aus)
- Chesterfield Islands (Nca)
- Port Vila
- Mackay (Australia)
- Great Barrier Reef

They are all in S. Monsoon (except Mackay) and weather is currently "Fine".
This is the very first turn of Japan on Guadalcanal scenario.

I am using the Yamato HQ and a 6-3 white print INF, not the MARINE I said earlier.

Does this have anything to do with the nationality of the territory?
In the scenario USA flags appear over New Caledonia and all the territories I get the DSRP over.
The UK flag flies over the others that I do NOT get the DSRP over.

If the game works correctly, nationality shouldn't affect. You would be able to invade if they are at war or not invade if there is no war, but no country-based penalties to invade them.

Any chance of putting a saved game in here? That might help a bit, to investigate this. It seems like strange behaviour, because in fine weather, you can invade any hex without getting disrupted with the units you are mentioning an the hexes in New Caledonia...

Sorry for the delay, I wasn't reading the forums, but rather enjoying playing (learning) the game!

Here is the saved game. First impulse, invasion subphase. Try and move the Japanese INF units onto New Caledonia, and you should see the disrupted notification highlighted. As far as I can tell, this does not seem correct.

Thanks for responding everyone!

<edit>I attached the saved game.

I attached the saved game.
Zip it and use the "Embed picture in post" checkbox, then the "Click here to upload", then navigate to the saved zip file and select it to upload.

In other words, it uses the same process as adding a picture to a post but instead of a JPEG, you upload a ZIP.

You won't see the embed picture checkbox if you use the quick reply box at the bottom of this page, you need to use one of: Reply, Quote, or New Thread.

Edit: Fast learner!

This thread should be moved to the 'Tech Support' since it sure looks like a bug to me.

I wonder if it has anything to do with that every hex in New Caledonia is US controlled while it should be Free French (at least if my memory serves). While looking at relations I can not find any Free French nation at all and I am pretty sure that Free France should be included as a major power.

Thank you, Toko33, for bringing this to our attention. [:)]

Edit: The invading unit gets disorganized when invading any hex that belongs to New Caledonia. Even the one hex islands. But those are the only hexes that I found where this happens although I didn't check any other sea areas.
