Small goof, big penalty

Post by LeeChard »

Checking my ship withdrawals I see CL Birmingham needs to e withdrawn. It's at Colombo but, OH NO, it has begun her
upgrade!
It will take 17 turns at 15 PP's per turn, IMHO that's a severe penalty. If I were an admiral wouldn't I be able to
order the work to be halted in a day or two and send her to the next command to finish(or not)?

If you were an admiral who ignored orders to move an asset to another theater the penalty would be pretty extreme [;)]
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Even the admirals I've known didn't have the power to wave their hands and have hull cuts magically heal, or hydraulic systems knit themselves together overnight. The withdrawal system is finicky, but the information is there years out in the interface. Take this as an expensive lesson and move on. It's a long war.

Believe me there are harder pills to swallow. Like having a Brit BB due to withdraw so damaged that you cannot move her. Life sucks then. You really have to be careful about that. It would be nice if you could substitute another ship or combination of lesser ships. That would make sense in the real world.

Yeah, it would. So would not having subs target the escort 50% of the time. [:'(]

But a substitution system would take a LOT of code.

I'm not 100%, and I don't have any current ships to withdraw to test it, but try this:
Go to ships (the little yellow icon on the top bar), select "show ships under repair" (bottom right). When you click it, it will turn red and say "show active ships"
Right click on the ship in question and see if the withdraw is there. I know you can authorize upgrades for a ship in repair mode (such as shipyard or pierside), but I don't know if you can withdraw a ship in this manner.

Note that the ship in question needs to be in a port that it can withdraw from - I think Colombo counts, so you should be good there.

My favorite botch is discovering I'm losing 60 PP per turn for some large transport ship that is currently in the middle of the Pacific carrying troops and will take several weeks to reach destination and another several weeks to reach a port it can withdraw at.

Do this to yourself enough times and you will quickly develop the habit of checking the list weekly and planning ahead for any ships with less than 30 days left.

For some non-critical ship types I will even go ahead and withdraw them 30-90 days before the due date is they are currently in a convenient locale for withdrawal.

I do that too. The S-boats in particular. Just sent one back with 110 days remaining. Too long a trip to the WC to risk a patrol.

Yep. I tend to withdraw them early.

What would be nice is if Tracker would track ship withdrawals like it does air units...

Political Points are one of those great (and at times frustrating) games within the game. Doubt there is anyone among us that can say he (she?) hasn't fumbled a few points in every game, some fumbles much worse than others... I rather enjoy it, but then again I like pilot training, shipping supplies, production schedules, and other cool games within this game, I'm just weird that way.

+1 to Han's comments. As allied you need to check 2-3 times a month early on, slows down a bit to where you can get away with every month or so later in the game. As noted, there is no penalty for early withdrawls, other than potential lost capacity or fighting power. Not in front of the game, but as I recall the due dates are quickly sortable, for both Sqdns (don't forget about those!) and ships. If you can't recall what far flung mission you have a specific ship on, you can look the ship up in the ship DB, then find the TF in the Task Force DB (click on location will jump you right there). Then "cry for me my lost Political Points"...if you looked late and have "weeks to run" to get to an exit port :)

Now I'm going to go back to counting my engines and airframes...

It's often missed since it was patched in and is not in the manual, but there's a button.

Ship icon in tool bar. Press. Top center of button stack on bottom of window is a handy button "Ships Withdrawing in 90 Days" or similar. Click it and you get a list with current locations which are also hotpoints. Click one and right to the TF the ship is in. Make a new TF, add escorts, and get her out of Dodge to a withdrawal port. No need to scroll or anything else.

If a ship is under repair in a port where withdraws are allowed, you can click on the "Show Ships Under Repair" button and the withdraw button is available there. If the ship is in upgrade in a port where it isn't allowed, you're screwed until the ship is online again.

It does. In the Ships panel, choose Status of Withdrawal. That adds a Withdrawal date column. Not the best way to do that, but it's there...
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

In my first campaign I blew 700 PP a few times when I broke down a division and then set two regiments to one HQ and the third to another HQ. Also was buying out Australian units to the Southwest Pacific when I could have bought them out to the Australian 1st or 2nd Corps for half the PP..[:@]

What happens if the ship is sunk? I am just starting as allies.
I think like air units early withdrawl should get you some points!
