Bringing WIR to life

Post by Paul2 »

Having played Second Front/ WIR for many years I wonder if anyone else out there like me has tried to bring the 'nameless' infantry divisions etc to life. I 'd like to recommend Samuel Mitcham's book 'Hitler's Legions' as a way of getting some deails on the German divisions. Here are some examples:-
1st - East Prussians
7th Inf Div - contained French LVF volunteers
39th Inf - had Polish vols (also 48th)
45th Inf - former Austrian Army
22nd and 91st - trained in Air Landing
93rd - until 1943 partly SA
136th - contained some Soviet POW vols
Some divisions were for older men - 198th, 199th, 205, 209
293rd - 'Bear Division' - Berliners
294th Saxons
333rd - mainly Poles
340th - Konigsbergers
369th - Devil's Division - Croatians (also 392nd - Croat)
416 - "Whipped Cream Division" - derogatory nick-name for Division made up of soldiers with special dietary needs!
I find this adds interest for me. I also have Poirier and Connors "Red Army Order of Battle in the Great Patriotic War" but the details are not so good. Other books I'd like to recommend are Osprey's "Ostfront" for a good concise coverage of the Russo-German war along with a fair number of Osprey books on the armies of most of the combatant nations (Rumanian Army, Spanish Blue 250th Div, Baltic Vols etc etc - www.ospreypublishing.com). For a 'ground level' view of life on the Eastern Front for the German soldier I'd like to recommend "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer of the GD Div, and "The Outermost Frontier" taken from the diary of Helmut Pabst who died in 1943. Both of these are very powerful reading experiences.
As for websites - www.Lexikonderwehrmacht.de has every German regiment listed, never mind Division! Does anyone know a good website for listing Soviet Divisions (in English) with history details etc. Also, can anyone recommend any good reference websites for details on WW2 AFV's and/ or aircraft?
Best regards and happy gaming!
