Japanese Land Based Torpedo Bombers

Post by kstoddard2 »

Gents,

How do I get torpedoes for my Bettys and Nells? I cant figure out how purchase torpedoes for my base forces or set a torpedo level. None of my base forces seem to have the torpedo ordinance device, only air HQs. What am I doing wrong here?

Nothing. Your HQ's have to have torps, and your bases have to be in the operation range of the HQ to use them. I believe it is 7 hexes, but someone with better precise knowledge is sure to chime in.

So none of the Base Forces can supply torpedoes? The first sentence of the rule book under rule 7.2.1.10.2.2, "Land Based Torpedo Supply" says: "On land, torpedoes are supplied from Air HQs or appropriate Base Forces that carry a "Torpedo Ordnance" device." I do not see that device on any base forces. is the rule book wrong?

not really, book is static, but had to include thing they thought were going to happen but they ran out of time/or decided against.

air HQs have the device. just no base forces i know of.

the term is IDIOT.

The manual is correct.

There was a thread on this recently, and I copied the following information into a Word document that I keep on WITP-AE "Tips and Techniques". I believe that Alfred authored this information. That Word document is now about 46 pages long....

It is a two step process to get the relevant HQs to maintain a torpedo inventory.

(A) Set up the inventory

1. Click on the HQ's TOE button.
2. On the TOE screen, the "torpedo ordnance" will be in yellow. Click here to take you to the unit torpedo inventory screen.
3. On the torpedo inventory screen you can type in increments of 20 torpedoes. Best to specify a minimum inventory of 100 torpedoes.

(B) Maintain the inventory

1. On the HQ screen, toggle the replacements to be on
2. Ensure the base at which the HQ is on, has sufficient supply on hand to purchase torpedoes for restocking the inventory.
3. The purchase cost is 20 supply points per torpedo.

Aircraft equipped with torpedoes do not have to be collocated with an HQ which maintains a torpedo inventory. It suffices to be within range of the relevant HQ.

Be aware that each allotment of 20 torpedoes consumes a chunk of supply.

At low supply bases you may want to restrict the stockpile you a lot to an HQ to what you think you will actually need rather than simply stockpiling 100.

100 is a good number for bases flush with supply.

The bolded step above is important, I just realized I had missed this step in a current game when I saw my Betties dropping bombs. I had done the other steps, loading 20 torps and setting inventory to 100, but I didn't realize I had turned replacements off for that HQ at some point, and had to turn it back on to get it to restock.
Just when I get the hang of a game, I buy two more... :)

The range is dependent on the HQ itself, the best I've seen from the Japanese side is 5 hexes. The range of the HQ can be found in the top left corner of the units' "stat" page. Also keep in mind that any air HQ (army or navy) will supply torps to any air unit that can carry them.
