Into the Ring - AAR - 3rd Game (Turns 1-30)

Post by Jason Petho »

This was the third try of this scenario. I played the PLO/Syrian forces in all three attempts.

We played through to the end of this scenario. With each attempt, my Israeli opponent became increasingly better and better, learning new tactics and better utilization of the modern forces.

Here's what happened.

Turn 1

Here's an overview of the battlefield. As you can see, there are some coastal towns in the west and numerous ridges to the east, making the terrain difficult for armoured forces. Most of the high value victory locations are along the coast, but there are substatial points in the hills, including hidden points (supply depots).

This time, my intention is just to attempt to make the advance up the coast relatively painful, and keep my troops in wooded areas in the hills.

Along the coast, I am plotting artillery in the open area in hopes of catching some loaded APC's. Does it work? Rarely... does it feel good when it does? Yes, yes it does!

Otherwise the troops in this coastal area are stagnant for the first few turns.

In the south, I'm advancing my Commando's and PLO forces in a line between Kliliye and Baawerta with the aim of positioning the missiles the with the best potential LOS on any avenues of approach.

Turn 2

Overview

As you can see, there is a lot movement of my troops over in the east. I will send most of the infantry to south and the wooded hills northeast of Baawerta and start digging in.

Turn 2
Northwest

Looks like I lucked out and scored a hit with my out of line of sight artillery strike. You can see he is advancing through the open terrain, avoiding some of the urban fighting for now. Wise move!

You can see some Terrorist squads in the north. They are setting some IED's for the pending arrival of his tanks.

Turn 3.

Coast sector.

Naame is still being flanked and the Israeli's are taking up positions around the hills in preparation for an assault on Dawha. I suspect that will come in the next handful of turns.

I am still trying to lay as many IED's as I can, to hopefully slow up his advance a bit.

Turn 3, southern sector.

My infantry in the south have already run into the Israeli mechanized infantry. I wasn't able to secure as much territory in the woods as I had hoped, but I'll keep sending troops down here to fill in the line.

Turn 4

The assault on Naame is in full swing. I have light forces there and he is using his numbers far more effectively.

I am still trying to get some damaged units from artillery, but my artillery is limited, so getting a disable is a rare treat.

Here is the coastal sector.

3D view of the coastal front.

This is around Haret Chbib. You can see the amount of IED's I am laying in this sector (identified as mines). They may slow him down for a turn or two, but I am not expecting a lot from them.

Turn 4
South

I am still moving my troops up. The terrain is brutal for quick movement, so it is a slow and tedious advance. Fortunately, same goes for the Israeli's.

Turn 5

With Naame fallen and Dawha to fall shortly, I am pulling my troops back a bit so they last a few more turns. I am still trying to lay as many IED's as I can.

I am hoping to cause some casualties as his troops move into the woods. Although, if he keeps leading with his tanks, there is not much I have to stop him at the moment.

Turn 5
Southern sector

My troops are digging in along their defensive line and I am moving Milans and Saggers into defensive positions with decent LOS, in case in decides to meander in these parts.

Turn 6
Coast

The assault on Dawha has started and I am still trying to move troops north, albiet slowly.

I have some armoured reinforcements that have arrived the previous turn, you can see them on the east side of the screenshot. I am sending them down south.

I am finding that my RPG and sniper teams are most effective in this battle so far. They are "hidden shooters", so they cause some issues for the Israeli's. I can fire at them (each time I fire rolls a die to see if they are revealed or not) and if I am lucky the Israeli's can't fire back.

Turn 6
Coast

Here's the 3D screenshot of the above.

I am still attempting to lay IED's, but it looks like I am running out of time.

Turn 6
South

Looks like a company of M60's have shown up. They have good Line of Sight to the area and are in a good position to block any advance. I am swinging a couple of T54 platoons along the southern map edge to see what is down there. My improved positions are starting to pop up, but they are slow going due to the Adaptive AI settings for the Pro East nation.

Turn 7
Coast

The Israeli's are still advancing strong along the coast. They are clearing the woods and hills that flank the road, which is good! Wise move on his part. Unfortunately, it's decreasing the time it takes for me to set up a defence.

I'm still moving my armoured vehicles around and sending them south.

You can see some Israeli helicopters floating around. They provide excellent intel when hovering, letting him see what I am up to (as long as I am in Line of Sight).

Turn 7
South

Blasted Cobra's are hovering around the map edge in the south, taking away my surprise. I will hold that mechanized infantry battalion in the rear for a bit before attempting to send it west.

Otherwise, troops are still digging in and setting up ambush positions.
