Radar question?

Post by GBS »

I have noticed that some engineer units have "SDR 270 Radar" as part of their makeup. Well, I have been sending those engineer units forward to PM and Lunga with the idea that I will pick up some kind of early warning advantage because of the radar those units posess. Is this correct and if so, how does it show up in the game? Manual had no information and a search turned up nothing.

This is not a definitive answer, but it's been my experience that radar does help.

You'll see greater numbers of planes in the air for CAP over a base with radar, because of the advanced warning the air crews can scramble to meet the incoming threat.

Definitely helps. Not only with numbers in the air but your cap is able to get higher than it would with no radar. Meaning the number of planes that actually intercept is higher.

Speaking strictly from IJN point of view...RADAR SUCKS!!!!!

And that is because I have been on the receiving end of several radar assisted CAP missions and the results were horrifying.

When does this occur? Does it happen in the long game? I checked the ground units in scenario 17 in the beginning and none of the units showed radar. Maybe it is only with some units in one of the other scenarios.

Some of the later Base Forces (Allied) have them.

But they are real fragile. Move them to PM and they'll be gone in a week.

Don't count on any radar advantage for a base. It's nice if you get it, but the radar doesn't last long enough to become part of your strategy.

This has been my experience, at least.

I imagine radar would be easier to rebuild in port than it would be at sea. In one of my other posts on radar, I included a quote from a radar operator who used an old WW2 radar set on a DD he was stationed on. He said those things would rarely operate after the guns started firing, and thus were useless after the initial reports of inbound planes.

Ships would probably only store a limited number of parts for these things and the land based units would only have slightly more replacement parts due to the remoteness of where you put these things. I would not expect to be able to run down to Walmart in PM and buy a new magnegadget for my radar set.

Also, if you have seen pictures of these things, they aren't small. If I was flying a bombing run and dropped a 500 lb bomb on the transmitter antennae, I would not expect it to be operational again for some time.

Interesting link of radar from the period.
