Support Mission escorts

Is there a work around for not having the escort option for support missions?

Typically I have a barcap out from the carrier, and a pair of fighters on alert for intercept missions on the deck to catch leakers. I'l like to be able to put assign pair of fighters for close protection of an AWACS on a support mission. Is there a better way of doing this than creating a AAW Patrol mission with the same waypoints?

Not as far as I know; fortunately setting up an AAW patrol is quick and easy.
