Dxdiag

Post by Jim D Burns »

Tried to run turn with .exe running as administrator (my account is administrator, but I specifically ran the .exe as administrator using the right click mouse button menu). Norton already had exceptions set allowing the program to run so no need for changes there. Again I was able to run one turn but crashed when I tried to run a second turn.

For the first time I got a pop-up after the CTD, so I took a screenshot and included it in the zip with my Dxdiag file and logs folder.

For testing purposes please do the following:

Open the game installation folder and find a file named AGESettings.exe. Run it and click on Display tab. On Screen Mode select Standard. On Windowed Mode select Fixed Resolution with Border.
On the Screen Resolution select 1280x1024. Click on the Change button and check if there's some improvement regarding crashes. Are they happening at the end of the first turn, or are they lasting longer?

I cannot get the 1280x1024 to change. Borderless/border settings changed, but every time I re-open settings to confirm the changes took place, its back to desktop resolution. Any ideas how to get it to change?

Jim

Edit: Ok it worked, even though settings says use desktop resolution, it does display in a windowed box set to 1280x1024. And I ran 3 turns without a crash, so the issue is apparently display related.

A bug occurs in the windowed box though, mouse-over pop-ups for things like diplomacy item descriptions and a few other things run off the box edge and cannot be read. So the pop-ups do not see or react to the windows bordered box.

I believe it's related with the graphic card, drivers and the game engine (DirectX8).
On your Nvidia Control Panel (Manage 3D settings) , how have you set DSR factor?

Turns out I spoke too soon. Tried to actually play a game last night (instead of simply pressing end turn without doing moves as I originally did) in windowed mode and had 2 CTD's so I gave up. Here's a screenshot of my 3D settings:

I don't recall the screen size for sure, I was trying out different size desktops and windows to try and find a good display setting that was large enough to display most mouse-over pop-ups in the window without the box running off the screen behind the window border thus making the game unplayable. I think I went with a 1920x1080 desktop and a 1600x900 window when I actually dug into the turns and tried to play a game, but I'm not 100% sure, I may have gone with the 1280x1024 again. I know I also experimented some with a 2560x1440 desktop and different window sizes, so it could be one of those too.

I've since tried a turn or two and several nation starts back in full screen mode to look over the different nations and familiarize myself with OOB's and early events. Most if not all of those full screen turns crashed on turn two as usual, so I don't have the logs from the windowed mode crashes anymore I'm afraid (I delete the save folder for turns that crash and use a new start to look at different countries). Sorry I'm usually good at keeping the files when I crash, but it's happened so often I figured there wouldn't be anything new for you to look at in another save upload so didn't think to preserve anything.

Let me know what you want tested and I'll test it out carefully and upload any log files and anything else you might need. I'm happy to help out any way I can in tracking down the issues.

The reason why I want you to try a lower resolution window like 1280x1024, is just to see if the issue can be related with video memory usage. It won't be a conclusive test, but it's a starting. I know it won't be very easy and pleasant to play with such small window, but just try for a couple of turns, and please let us know if the crash is taking longer than with your normal resolution.

Can you also tell us if you are using any program from the graphics card maker?

Thank you AGEOD. Not sure what you did but as of the 19 Dec. upload of 1.02 beta I can now play in full screen (1920x1080) mode without a crash for 5 turns in a row. I'll continue and try and get a good long session of 10+ turns in sometime this week to really give it a test run.

I should mention that under 1.011 and the first release of 1.02 beta three of the buttons in the top left of the screen stopped working. Only the ledger button worked, the others were no longer clickable, but I was able to use the f11 etc. buttons to get to the screens I needed, just those buttons stopped working. Under the 19 Dec. 1.02 beta release they are all working again.

OK, I played about 2 months (mid Jan to mid March) before I got a crash. I've zipped up the logs folder, a dxdiag I ran right after the crash and a screenshot showing all Nvidia entries in my processes tab in windows task manager.

Try the following:
Click on the Options button and click on the System button. Reduce Max. Texture size by moving the slider to the extreme left and turn on the option No Winter Map.
Exit the game and start the game.
