Do I need planet type tech for migration?

Post by tppytel »

I just conquered a small Dhayut colony that their empire dropped right on my (Human) border. It's a decent (75% plus good ruins) Desert Planet, so I wouldn't mind trying to build the planet into something useful. However, I don't have the Desert Colonization tech yet. Will my Humans migrate there anyway? Or do I need the tech for that? I know they won't have an optimal growth rate until I research the follow-up tech. I haven't seen any Passenger Ships heading there with migrants yet, but it hasn't been all that long since I took it, so maybe I just need to wait longer.

No tech required but would you like to live on a Dhayut planet? [:-]

Thanks for the quick reply.

The Dhayut AI vastly overexpanded, dropping colonies multiple sectors from his homeworld with no defenses or development, while I had very few colonization options available. So I figured I'd just scoop up a few of those and enslave the bugs into chain gangs, domestic servitude, etc. while their populations were tiny. It shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 migration boats to make them majority Human planets.

More broadly, (and this is in Icemania's AI mod if it matters) it doesn't seem like you have many options in dealing with Insectoid races. They all instinctively hate you so much that it's pointless trying to ally with their empires and they incur large happiness penalties. So allowing bug populations to grow unchecked is just going to create unstable, unhappy colonies, especially when inevitable wars with the bug empires break out. It seems better to cut off their growth early on (at the cost of some immediate pop growth) and put that planetary space to better long-term use.

Pretty much. Just cut your losses and either resettle to outside your empire if you can or take a short-term happiness hit and exterminate them.

I vote exterminate, simply as with this mod you seem to speak of there's a happiness hit to just having the stupid bugs (in vanilla there is not such a happiness hit so I kept them around for the war weariness bonuses as they don't do anything bad).
