can't start game on Windows 7

Post by gledder »

I just bought the game and cannot get it to start. I downloaded all three patches and installed them in chronological order. I get the initial menu that has Adanac Command Studies in the lower left corner. When I click on PLAY, I get the setup screen with the heading Campaigns of La Grande Armee and choices for scenarios and fog of war. I can click those buttons and the display changes accordingly. But there is no button to press to actually start the game. I tried hitting the enter key and various other keys. I thought perhaps the window is too deep for my laptop, but I can't move the window to find out. I originally ran it without setting compatibility; then I changed the properties of the short cut to Win95 compatibility. This made no difference. I looked through old post and didn't see the same problem.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure to check the logs of these to see if it was one of them which was to blame.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

It may be that the screen resolution you have chosen is not showing all of the game screen, try some of the other screen resolution options to see if you can get the whole game screen to appear.

I don't know what you mean by adding the game to my antivirus and firewall, but I tried turning off the anti-virus and that didn't work.

I was using a standard account. Adding administrator status to that account didn't work either.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and did not get any requests to add game prerequisites.

Just to be clear: I can launch the game and get to the main game menu. The game menu window does not include a start or go button, but it looks like there might be a button like that below the visible part of the menu. I cannot drag the window up to see.

This makes sense, but I don't see how to do it. The buttons for resolution are on the same screen as the buttons for choosing the scenario. I get that screen, but I can't get past it. I tried changing the resolution in the shortcut property menu, but the game then tells me the resolution is too low.

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8)
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

Hello gledder, sorry for the problems you're having. May I ask what version of Windows you're running and what the screen resolution of your display is when you go to start the game?

Had a PM discussion with Gledder, it looked like the available resolution options on his system did not allow the bottom of the game's intro screen to show, so he couldn't get access to the buttons setting game resolution and 'Start'. The work-around was to use the 'Windows' settings to rotate the display 90 degrees, which got access to the game buttons (flip display back after making settings and 'Start'). He got the game going, but his available resolutions did not show the game full screen, although enough to get started.

One of my laptops has only one display option which matches those available in the game, so it's luck of the draw whether your system has suitable options that some will match. [&:]

Hopefully Gledder will confirm how he is getting on.
